The Witness Reimagined As An 8-Bit NES Game

by Elise Favis on Jun 04, 2016 at 05:32 AM

One dedicated fan recreated Jonathan Blow's especially difficult puzzle game The Witness as a Nintendo Entertainment System game.

Cleverly titled The Wit.nes, the de-make is currently available as a free downloadable demo on creator Dustin Long's itch.io page. You'll need an NES emulator to play on PC, Mac, Linux, or mobile. The demo encompasses only the starting section of the game, but Long plans to add around 30 puzzles in the final product.

The demo took two months to build, and is meant to be "a reinterpretation and tribute to the original work." Head here to download the demo yourself. This isn't Long's first time dabbling in NES development. Last year, he released Star Versus, an 8-bit shooter that you can actually buy in cartridge form for the NES.

The Witness released earlier this year for PlayStation 4 and PC. You can read our review here, and check out our interview with Jonathan Blow about puzzle design.
