The Sims 4 Loosens Gender Restrictions For Customization Options
The Sims 4's recent update expands previous gender restrictions in the Create A Sim mode, to give players broader customization options when designing their characters.
Maxis worked with GLAAD, an LGBTQ advocacy group, to develop this update. Now, you can choose your sim's strut, tone of voice, and physique regardless of your initial gender selection. Over 700 sets of clothing, accessories, and hairstyles that were previously categorized and restricted by gender, will now be available universally, including content from the base game as well as expansions.
Additionally, you'll now be able to change a sim's gender in-game whenever you wish, and you can designate whether your sim can reproduce. In a blog post from the team at EA, they wrote, "The Sims is made by a diverse team for a diverse audience, and it's really important to us that players are able to be creative and express themselves through our games. We want to make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more."
The Sims series has always been about giving players expansive, life-like possibilities in a sandbox setting. While the series has allowed same-sex relationships since the original, adding more options in terms of gender representation seems like another step in a positive direction.
