Epic Expands Unreal Engine 4 Beyond Games With McLaren, Nickelodeon Partnerships

by Matt Bertz on Mar 16, 2016 at 09:28 AM

The Unreal Engine 4 is flying high, with 1.5 million new users adopting the toolset since its announcement last year that licensing the engine is free for all designers. Today during his GDC talk, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney revealed new ventures that are taking the powerful engine out of video games and into new industries.

Sweeney invited McLaren Automotive design operations manager Mark Roberts to the stage to talk about how the luxury sports car manufacturer is leveraging the power of the engine to design cars well before they get to the stage of creating physical models. He also revealed that Epic and McLaren have developed a new consumer facing tool that allows would-be buyers to customize their McLarens. Similar to a Nike ID editor, prospective owners can experiment mixing and matching paint colors, seat materials, etc. to build their dream car.

Later, Sweeney revealed that Nickelodeon is currently making a new animated show in realtime using the Unreal Engine 4. The short teaser starred a Mega Man style anime character rushing through a futuristic environment fighting off swarms of chasing drones. Epic did not reveal the show title.
