Super Mario Maker Adding New Stage Elements And Super Expert Mode

by Brian Shea on Mar 03, 2016 at 10:10 AM

Super Mario Maker is adding even more elements to its arsenal. In a free update coming March 9, Nintendo will be adding new components including a favorite menace from Super Mario World, as well as pieces that look to help give creators even more control over how players progress through their levels.

The update is adding new alternative versions of course elements, which are obtained by shaking the elements with the Wii U stylus in the course-creation mode. If you shake a Thwomp, it will transform into the skewer trap from Super Mario World. Shaking a P-switch turns it into a key, which can be used to open key doors (obtained by shaking the door). Keys can also be planted on enemies, meaning you can set up enemy encounters that are mandatory in order to pass the stage. Finally, the update lets you shake the coin to turn it into the pink coin, which can add a collection aspect to levels.

The update also adds a new Super Expert mode to the online 100 Mario Challenge. This new mode unlocks after beating Expert mode in 100 Mario Challenge. Super Expert mode lines players up with six extremely challenging stages and awards them with new Mystery Mushroom costumes.

Nintendo has also announced new changes to online course web portal, which will help players use new criteria to sift through the avalanche of created courses. This will come in handy, as Nintendo announced that players have created over 6.2 million Super Mario Maker courses to date.
