Darth Vader And Luke Skywalker Duke It Out In Star Wars: Commander

by Ben Reeves on Dec 12, 2014 at 02:00 AM

Echos of the Force is a new time-limited campaign that takes players to the world of Er’Kit and introduces Vader and Luke Skywalker to the game.

Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader haven’t been featured Disney’s Clash of Clan-like mobile game before, but in today’s update, players will uncover the Rebel’s secret plans, and help defend the Er’Kit people from the Empire as these iconic Star Wars Characters.

Fortunately, these new heroes also have some special abilities that will help turn the tied of battle.

“In the middle of battle you have the ability to trigger this special power where each character will deflect blaster fire away from themselves,” says Star Wars Commander executive producer and VP of Disney Interactive Nate Etter. “They draw fire away from the turrets and the defensive structures from the base. They can help nullify some of the damage from the defensive structures while doing damage to the buildings that surround them. They’re some pretty powerful characters.”

In addition to Luke and Vader, this new update adds a couple of time-limited units, including:

Rebel Starship Strike A–Wing : The Rebel Alliance uses A-Wing starfighters to support ground forces. Their powerful weaponry employs an advanced targeting system, concentrating firepower to dispatch particle shields.

Empire Starship Strike TIE Advanced: A newly developed advanced prototype of the TIE Starfighter line, these starships are equipped with a highly sophisticated target tracking system, making them extremely useful against shields.

Rebel Infantry Vanguard Units: Vanguards field powerful PLEX rocket launchers, designed to destroy walls from a distance. They can easily destroy single walls, but are slow and best used to create breaches for other unit types.

When we asked Etter if Disney had any plans to release a new game or special update in conjunction with the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens film next year, the Disney VP said, “It’s a really fun time to be working in Star Wars. There is a lot of exciting stuff coming up. With Star Wars Commander in particular, we built the platform in a way that would allow us to tell story. We’ve been working closely with the Lucas Film story team to be able to tell this story arc that spans from Episode IV through the events of The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi, and potentially into the future beyond that.”

Our Take
I’m not a huge fan of Clash of Clans-type games, and I only played Star Wars Commander for about two days before I got tired of the wait timers, but this is a cool addition and it might get me to jump back into the game and give it another spin.
