Portal Designer's Soul Fjord Comes To Ouya This Month

by Kyle Hilliard on Jan 18, 2014 at 04:29 AM

Airtight Games, the developer behind Quantum Conundrum and home to Kim Swift, lead designer on the original Portal, has announced a release date for its Ouya exclusive rhythm combat game, Soul Fjord.

The game will be available exclusively for the Ouya on January 28. If you're unfamiliar with the game, it's one part roguelike action game, one part rhythm game. It has its roots in Norse mythology, but it crosses over with a 70s aesthetic and funk music vibe. Players take on the role of Magnus Jones as he tries to make his way to Club Valhalla at the top of Yggdrasil, where he has been denied entry. Swift breaks the game down in more detail on the game's official blog. She discusses how combat works, and how after finishing Quantum Conundrum the team couldn't decide if it wanted to make a Norse mythology game or a 70s funk game, so they just mashed up the ideas.

You can find out more about the game, including a developer diary on the its development by heading here.

Our Take
Soul Fjord certainly sounds like a bizarre game. It's the sort of game Ouya pitched itself with before launch – strange indie games that were perhaps too weird for mainstream consoles – but has mostly failed to deliver. Maybe Soul Fjord can provide the Ouya with a similar boost of interest and confidence, much like Towerfall did. I'm certainly curious to find out if it can.
