Disney Park Wristbands Pack In A Surprise For Infinity Players

by Jeff Cork on Aug 26, 2013 at 07:30 AM

Disney is experimenting with new RFID-infused wristbands the company is calling Magic Bands. In addition to streamlining visitors' park experiences, the bands also unlock a special toy box item in Disney Infinity.

Writer Suzannah Mitchell made the discovery on her Zannaland blog, where she often writes about Disney. In this post, she shows what happens when you place the Magic Band on the power-coin section of the Disney Infinity sensor. Users unlock the Dragon Gate, which also unlocks the Disney Dragon. Mitchell says the creature only appeared once, at a press event for the opening of New Fantasyland at Disney World. Check him out in the video below.

Our Take
You can call it clever or insidious – the only thing that really matters here is how well Disney knows its audience. When we saw Disney Infinity for the first time, I asked if we'd be seeing any exclusive content only available from the Disney parks. They couldn't provide a firm answer, but I assumed they'd just be selling a few limited-edition figures in their in-park stores. Now I'm more interested to learn if the wristband content eventually trickles down to everyone via power coins, or if only people who book a trip have access to the Dragon Gate and its accompanying beast.
