Ubisoft Not Satisfied With Current Consoles

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jul 06, 2011 at 01:55 PM

Sony and Microsoft have been adamant that the current generation of consoles is far from over, and while that may come as a relief to penny-pinching gamers, not everyone is happy. Today Ubisoft Montreal's Yves Jacquier expressed his frustration with developing for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.Biz, Jacquier says that Ubisoft is struggling with the limited processing power of today's consoles.

"Our challenge with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is that we're extremely limited in what we can do. It's a challenge for the engineers to provide nice graphics and nice AI and nice sound with a very small amount of memory and computation time.

"We think that the next generation of consoles won't have these limits any more. Games might have more realistic graphics and more on-screen, but what's the value of making something more realistic and better animated if you have poor AI?"

Jacquier also states that "AI has always been the real battle ground" for developers, and that its importance will increase with a new generation of consoles.
