NGP's Backwards Compatibility Explained

by Joe Juba on Jun 03, 2011 at 07:46 AM

Gamers have been speculating about how the NGP (or is it PSVita?) will play PSP games since the new handheld's announcement. At a recent press event, Sony finally divulged some hard details about the functionality.

While the NGP won't actually play UMDs, it will support all of the PSP games available on PSN. Not only that, but each one (yes, all of them) will feature optimizations like graphics smoothing, upscaling, and the ability to use dual analog controls. However, keep in mind that certain major PSP games never released in a downloadable format...so you won't be playing Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep on your NGP.

To illustrate the optimizations, Sony showcased Resistance: Retribution running on the NGP and controlled via the system's dual analog sticks. We're likely to see how more games take advantage of these upgrades next week at E3, so be sure to check back for all the latest news.
