Sony Launches Music Unlimited Service For PS3 In U.S.

by Matt Helgeson on Feb 17, 2011 at 09:45 AM

Today, Sony is allowing American music fans to begin to access its cloud-based "Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity" music service. The service has already been available in the U.K. and Ireland, and has proven quite popular.

The subscription based service works a bit like Last.FM or Pandora, letting you access a catalog of more than 6 million songs through dozens of personalized cloud-based virtual "radio stations." Music Unlimited will be a strong push for Sony's PlayStation 3, but will also work on Sony network enabled Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players, home theater systems, Sony portable devices, third-party Android-based mobile devices, and Vaio notebooks.

The service has two subscription tiers: basic and premium. The basic service costs $3.99 a month, and the premium is $9.99 a month. The basic is essentially an ad-free Internet radio station, while premium adds on-demand functionality for specific songs and the ability to create playlists and access to a Top 100 channels that are updated with current hits.

It will be interesting to see how popular Music Unlimited becomes in the States.
