NPD: NBA 2K11, New Vegas Lead In October Software Sales

by Annette Gonzalez on Nov 16, 2010 at 12:20 PM

The most recent NPD report is among us revealing October's top 10 software sales across all platforms with NBA 2K11 and Fallout: New Vegas in first and second place.

Check out the rankings below:

Top 10 Games (New Physical Retail only; across all platforms incl. PC)
1. NBA 2K11 (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, WII, PC)
2. Fallout: New Vegas (360, PS3, PC)
3. Medal of Honor (360, PS3, PC)
4. Fable III (360)
5. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (360, PS3, WII, PC, NDS)
6. Halo: Reach (360)
7. Just Dance 2 (WII)
8. FIFA Soccer 11 (PS3, 360, WII, PS2, PSP, NDS, PC)
9. Madden NFL 11 (360, PS3, WII, PS2, PSP)
10. WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 (PS3, 360, PS2, WII, PSP)

With the recent news of Viacom selling off Harmonix, there's an obvious curiosity as to how the developer's most recent music game, Rock Band 3, performed, to which NPD analyst Anita Frazier noted: "Rock Band 3 was the 15th best selling game at the title level (across platforms) for the month of October. Note that this title was launched on October 26, which only represents a few days in our October sales data. Based on solid reviews, this game has the potential to perform well over the holidays." There's a good chance that Rock Band 3 could crack the top 10 next month, but we'll just have to wait and see.

The NPD recently stopped breaking down hardware sales by console, therefore since we can't provide numbers ourselves, Frazier has this to say: "The best-selling hardware system for the month was the Nintendo DS, while the Xbox 360 was the only platform to realize unit sales improvement over last October." Frazier continues: "While the PS3 overall did not experience an increase from September to October, the PS3 bundle with Move experienced a 15 percent increase over September 2010. The Xbox 360 has generated the most unit sales among the console platforms on a year-to-date basis as of this month. The Nintendo DS remains the best-selling hardware system, overall."

In other words, Nintendo DS takes top spot this month and Xbox 360 was the only console to see a sales improvement compared to October 2009. The PS3/Move bundle performed well.
