Reader Discussion: Imagine DLC Of The Past

by Ben Reeves on Oct 22, 2010 at 04:00 PM

Downloadable content is a great way for developers to extend the life of their games and show their fans some appreciation by adding new and unique content to a title after its release. While DLC is a relatively recent phenomenon, what if it wasn't? What if DLC had been around since the beginning of gaming?

Imagine for a minute that the Internet had always existed in its current form, or that for some reason developers in the ‘80s and ‘90s had been able to add content to their titles after they had hit store shelves. What would that have looked like?

What kind of items or costumes might Nintendo have added to the original Super Mario Bros? Might Capcom have offered Mega Man or Nathan Spencer as downloadable characters for Street Fighter II, thus creating the Vs. series a decade early? Can you image the extra story missions Square could have released for gamers who'd already finished Final Fantasy VII?

Obviously, there is a lot of room to imagineer here. So what do you think? What’s your dream DLC that never was?
