Ubisoft Demands High Score For Assassin’s Creed 2 From German Magazine?

by Tim Turi on Nov 08, 2009 at 06:40 AM

Assassin’s Creed 2 is a huge release for the month of November. Game reviewers everywhere will be trying their hardest to get their critique of the game available to consumers as quick as possible. Allegedly, Ubisoft threatened a German publication’s access to an early review copy of AC2 if they didn’t guarantee a high score for the game.

Computer Bild Spiele, the German magazine in question, recently revealed this scandalous news on the cover of their current issue. It reads, “Assassin’s Creed 2 scandal! Publisher wanted us to guarantee a score of ‘sehr gut.’”

“Sehr gut” is the publications equivalent to an ‘A’ grade, and obviously a coveted mark of quality for games.

The German publication recently posted an online preview of the article, which says “Our reviews are tough, but fair. We will not give up our independent scores for the sake of a timely review. This holds true for “Assassin’s Creed 2″. The publisher asked us to guarantee the score ’sehr gut’, otherwise we would not receive a review copy, thus we will publish our review in next month’s issue. We’d be more than glad to give the game a ’sehr gut’, but only if it deserves it.”

Assassin’s Creed 2 has been shaping up to be a great title, and it’s frustrating that a controversy such as this might mar an otherwise smooth countdown to launch. We have contacted Ubisoft and are awaiting comment.

If this is in fact true, would it ever affect your decision to purchase the game?
