PSP-3000 Costs $100 Less Than PSPgo in Japan, and Sony Doesn’t Care

To many gamers, the PSPgo seems like an extremely bold move from Sony – a hearty push toward an all-digital future. Then again, maybe they’re not pushing all that powerfully.

The PSP-3000, which will remain in production and on store shelves when the PSPgo arrives in Japan in November, will sell for nearly $100 less than the new UMD-less handheld. More amazingly, Sony claims they’re not concerned about this major price difference.

Asked if they were at all worried that consumers would just spring for the significantly less expensive option and ignore the technological leaps being attempted with the PSPgo, Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida responded, “That's fine. We have no intention to stop producing the PSP-3000.” Yoshida went on to explain that they still plan to support the older PSP model, and while some smaller games will only be released digitally, all major PSP titles will be available on UMD as well as on the PSPgo download service.

The two PSP models will have a similar (if slightly less overwhelming) price difference in the U.S., where the PSP-3000 is available in $200 bundles while the PSPgo will cost $250. We’re curious to see if the $50 difference will affect consumers’ purchasing decisions, but at $100 apart in Japan, it’s hard to imagine it wouldn’t.
