Nintendo Officially Announces Wii Price Cut

by Jeff Marchiafava on Sep 24, 2009 at 02:33 PM

Murmurings of Nintendo’s response to Sony and Microsoft’s price cuts have been circulating over the past couple weeks. As of today, the prophesied Wii Price cut has become a reality. Nintendo’s little white box of waggle will be $200 as of Sept. 27,, according to the company.

Gamers in Japan will have to wait for the price reduction until $200. The Japanese price will be falling from 25,000 ¥ ($273) to 20,000 ¥ ($218).

The Wii’s $250 price tag has remained firmly in place since its 2006 launch, and still manages to be the sales leader among the three manufacturers. With both Microsoft and Sony having dropped their console’s asking price by $100, will Nintendo’s $50 pittance be enough to maintain the lead? It certainly makes the device all the more tantalizing for families who haven’t yet taken the plunge.
