New Dynasty Warriors 9 Footage Is A Little Concerning

by Imran Khan on Aug 07, 2017 at 06:06 PM

Dynasty Warriors 9 (for clarification's sake, Dynasty Warriors 8 in Japan) is open world. That means, to some extent, developers at Koei Tecmo are having to throw out the bathwater and hope the baby stays in. Judging by the preview footage they released today, this might not be as simple as they would hope.

While the game is clearly very early, Dynasty Warriors 9 looks like it has more than a little bit of a mess to clean up. Enemies jitter and judder, clothes change on character models seemingly at random, enemies who have been knocked down inexplicably stand up to get knocked down again.

This is the first time the Dynasty Warriors series has gone open world and Koei Tecmo promises new mechanics in the series, such as stealth and side quests. The open world also offers players the ability to take down an area in whichever way they see fit, such as sneaking around the back for a rear attack.

Watch the video below to see what Koei Tecmo maybe should not have released as marketing material.

Our Take
I genuinely like Musou games, so it is disappointing to see this one start off so roughly. I hope they pull it together or, at least, iron out the kinks by the time they decide to try and take the other Musou games open world.
