Hearthstone's New Tavern Brawl Seeks Competitive Crowd

by Michael Leri on Oct 17, 2016 at 08:30 AM

If you seek more risk and challenge in Hearthstone, then the new Heroic Tavern Brawl is for you.

Starting this Wednesday and ending on Monday, Hearthstoners can pay 1,000 gold or $9.99 to enter the Heroic Tavern Brawl with a standard deck that cannot be changed once they lock it in. This added difficulty comes with rewards that get better with each defeated foe. If you can win 12 matches, you can earn 50 packs, a heap of Gold, piles of Arcane Dust, and three golden Legendaries. However, if you lose three times, you're out.

Game designer Dan Emmons stated this addition fits in line with their philosophy of surprising players with new content, saying that this brawl "helps mix it up a little bit." Adding a more competitive slant fits that philosophy of giving the players something different when they log in each week.

Our Take
Whether or not the community will like this brawl is one thing, but it's interesting to see Blizzard take some risks with their Tavern Brawls. Like game designer Pat Nagle said in the video, if it sucks, it's only live for a week and if it's good, it's only live for a week. That mindset breeds experimentation, which is healthy for the game.
