The lights are on
Today, Sega revealed the third title in its three-deal exclusivity partnership with Nintendo. Sonic Boom will be coming to Wii U and 3DS, but the surprise is that two Western studios will be handling the development.
Today, we heard from Big Red Button co-founder Bob Rafei (who led the visual art development on Naughty Dog’s Jak & Daxter series) about the direction that the Wii U title will be taking. “It’s ‘wide linear,’” Rafei told us. He likened the gameplay to Ratchet & Clank’s playground planets, encapsulated but offering players freedom to explore.
“We have a critical path that we want to make sure every player can access,” he said. “There are secondary paths as well. In playing legacy Sonic games, you have a lot of tiered gameplay and the advanced gamers would reach those upper levels.”
Two characters will cooperatively play in most areas, but boss fights will use all four of the playable Sonic team: Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. The game will also offer power-ups and exploration that will take advantage of each character’s abilities. Big Red Button is building the Wii U version of the game in CryEngine 3.
The portable version of Sonic Boom for 3DS will be developed by Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time studio, Sanzaru. No details were available yet about the portable iteration.
Sonic Boom is a new branch of Sonic Universe, and it will be paired with a CG cartoon with heavy humor overtones. Tomy will be leading toy development, and tie-ins will include plush, action figures, role play toys, remote controlled vehicles, and other novelties.
Sonic Boom is due out in 2014. For more, including a trailer, check out our additional coverage.

I was turned off by the new look of the Sonic team at first, but seeing it more and more... I dunno... I kind of really like it. I'm excited to see what this game does for Sonic and friends. I really, really hope it's good things...but we'll see.
What have they done to Knuckles? That's just not right.
"Nintendo-exclusive sonic game". Now those are some words that would have been utter heresy back in the 90s.
I really like Jak and Sly, and having this game tied to those has me really interested. I still hope that Sanzaru is working on a fifth Sly game too, though.
I guess knuckles shouldent have skipped leg day.
Oh god. This... no. Just... no.
These designs are so friggin' /unnatural/ that it actually nauseates me to look at them. There's another Sonic game I won't be buying.
Instead of making Sly 5 , they're making a portable Sonic game? This better be worth it Sanzaru! I want Sly 5!
I'm really excited about this game. Sure the character designs are a bit weird, but it's the gameplay that counts and from what we've seen so far, it looks great.
Sigh...well, perhaps it will turn out decently. My hopes are not high, and it is going to take some serious getting-used to in order for the new character designs to grow on me. The new designs for Sonic and (especially) Knuckles are awful.
Sonic adventure was the best. But I dont like knuckles new look
That... looks a bit odd.
I don't think there'll ever be a Sonic game worse than 2006, but this looks pretty bad. This is the last of Sega's 3-game Sonic exclusive deal with Nintendo, (after Lost World and Olympic Games) so I'm hoping that for PS4/Xbone we get a game more in line with Adventure 2 or Generations.
The trailer makes the game look very promising. The graphics look pretty slick, but those character designs do suck, especially Knuckles. Considering the fact that an animated show is also in production using the same designs, I highly doubt the looks of the characters are going to improve at this point.
please don't suck...sonic deserves a good game!
Is this real? because it seems SEGA might actually be doing something that could work regarding Sonic.
I dont think Art was the problem with any of the recent Sonic games, they should get a solid team to work on the gameplay.
I don't know about the new look, but I guess we'll see how it plays. Looks like Sonic and them are going through puberty.
bad idea to make those games exclusive to the wii-u, the console doesnt sell well and the sonic franchise already cant sell even in multi-console port...
CryEngine 3? For a Sonic game? ...Wow
