The lights are on
Today, Sega revealed the third title in its three-deal exclusivity partnership with Nintendo. Sonic Boom will be coming to Wii U and 3DS, but the surprise is that two Western studios will be handling the development.
Today, we heard from Big Red Button co-founder Bob Rafei (who led the visual art development on Naughty Dog’s Jak & Daxter series) about the direction that the Wii U title will be taking. “It’s ‘wide linear,’” Rafei told us. He likened the gameplay to Ratchet & Clank’s playground planets, encapsulated but offering players freedom to explore.
“We have a critical path that we want to make sure every player can access,” he said. “There are secondary paths as well. In playing legacy Sonic games, you have a lot of tiered gameplay and the advanced gamers would reach those upper levels.”
Two characters will cooperatively play in most areas, but boss fights will use all four of the playable Sonic team: Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. The game will also offer power-ups and exploration that will take advantage of each character’s abilities. Big Red Button is building the Wii U version of the game in CryEngine 3.
The portable version of Sonic Boom for 3DS will be developed by Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time studio, Sanzaru. No details were available yet about the portable iteration.
Sonic Boom is a new branch of Sonic Universe, and it will be paired with a CG cartoon with heavy humor overtones. Tomy will be leading toy development, and tie-ins will include plush, action figures, role play toys, remote controlled vehicles, and other novelties.
Sonic Boom is due out in 2014. For more, including a trailer, check out our additional coverage.

i cant wait when tim reviews this piece of trash
Sonic boom, Sonic boom, Knuckles is on steroids and this game will probably suck.
sonic boom might be good for sonic in a way pac-man did on game and tv
Thank god. We might actually get some 3d plat forming other than Mario this gen.
I can't even muster cautious optimism any more. I'll wait for the review to make final judgement, but I haven't had high hopes for a Sonic game in a long time.
Very odd. This could either be amazing or terrible. I need gameplay, a demo, and a review.
Oh, so this game is in the hands of some of my favorite PS exclusives???
This might not be TOO bad after all. Just fix Sonic's legs...bluuuuuuh...
I'm still confused...
Hmm. Gonna have to keep an eye on this.
After Lost Worlds shattered the hype I had built up from Colors and Generations, I think I'll wait for reviews here. the art style is atrocious and the gameplay looks like they may be reverting back to Sonic '06/Sonic Adventure. which seems like an awful idea to me.
When I first say knuckles now, I thought he was wearing shoulder pads.
Sure, Knuckles is about twice as tall as the other characters, looks like he's been hitting the gym (and skipping leg day), and is covered with bandages for whatever reason. However the bigger concern should be the fact that HE GREW FINGERS.
I would like to correct my comment but GI won't let me, I just keep getting, ah what did you do, like its my fault. Fix it GI.
Wait, its running on CryEngine 3?
Its crap. No need to see anything else, its crap. STOP. Don't argue, don't bring up a single decent game you lost it over because in a sea of crap it stood head and shoulders above. Which is still crap. Now lets talk about something good.
I can already see the mediocre review scores that praise it for trying something new, but saying that it ultimately fails to connect with the roots of what made "Sonic" so good in the past.
Would you look at that. It's raining outside. Huh.
