What's Happening

A Lootfest For The Ages

If you told me when the original Borderlands came out that its sequel would be one of my favorite games of all time and that it would have a story worth telling, I wouldn't have believed you. The first game was great, but nothing to really scream and shout about. However, then I played the sequel. And it was a joyous experience.

The controls have been tweaked from the first game, so it is even easier to pick it up and shoot a midget's head off. The controls are responsive and never get in the way of the experience. The UI has been overhauled to provide a cleaner display that makes it much easier to compare and contrast the glorious mountains of loot that you will come across throughout the game. Everything works perfectly on a fundamental level.

The biggest surprise of the game has to be the fantastic story. Unlike the first one's rather hollow shell of a story, this one grabs you from the beginning. It takes twists that I never saw coming and made me care about what was or was not going to happen. It balances serious, emotional moments with the amazing humor of the franchise with a deft hand that caught me off guard. A major proponent of the story working is the villain, Handsome Jack. Jack is such an interesting character, one minute mocking your abilities, the next begging you for mercy on someone, he is a fantastic character and part of the reason the story works so well.

I could go on and on about the fantastic writing, outstanding new classes, the impeccable co-op, or perfect mixture of RPG and shooter, but it would be preaching to the choir. Buy this game, play this game with friends, and just enjoy it. I know I did.

  • This game is by far a big step up from the last one as far as the writing. I hope the keep this formula moving forward and that a Borderlands 3 comes out in the future.
  • I agree with you 100 percent. Borderlands 2 was a phenomenal game. It was just perfect. Nice review.
  • I find your review very well written. The game is absolutely amazing and extremely addicting. I enjoyed the first one but the sequel filled in all the empty holes and just surpassed all of my expectations. If anybody doesn't have this game and enjoyed the first, I suggest getting it a soon as possible.
