The lights are on
While the first Uncharted was good, it wasn't great. The shooting was spotty, the story seemed forced, and the environments were rather bland. Needless to say, I was not a big fan of the first game at all. I got the impression from the first game that the Uncharted series just wasn't my cup of tea. Then I played Uncharted 2, and everything I new about the Uncharted series changed dramatically.
Uncharted 2 hits the ground running. From the very beginning of the game, to the ending cutscene, Uncharted 2 is a fast-paced experience that rarely slows down. Uncharted 2 corrects nearly all of it's predecessor's flaws. The shooting is nearly perfect, the story is great, and there is a huge variety of environments. Uncharted 2 probably has the greatest set pieces I've ever seen in a video game. Some of the set pieces are just mind-blowing. Whether you're fighting in a falling building, running on a collapsing bridge, or climbing up a fallen train, the set pieces in Uncharted 2 will amaze you. Uncharted 2 also has some great platforming. Uncharted 2 expands on the platforming that was in the first game like few other games do. The platforming in Uncharted 2 isn't just improved, it's revisioned. Nathan Drake climbs some pretty crazy stuff in Uncharted 2, but it never seems forced, or unrealistic. For the most part, Uncharted 2 is one of the most realistic games you'll ever play. Uncharted 2 also has a new multiplayer mode. While it might seem like a cheap add-on, the multiplayer is actually fantastic. While the gameplay in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was good, it wasn't great. The gameplay in Uncharted 2 is a vast improvement over its predecessor. The gameplay isn't just great, it's incredible.
The gameplay in Uncharted 2 is just incredible.
Uncharted 2 boasts some incredible graphics. While the graphics might not be as great now as they were in 2009, the game still looks incredible. While the first Uncharted looked great, the environments were very bland. For pretty much the entire game you're either in a jungle, or in a cave. The environments in Uncharted 2 are extremely varied. Uncharted 2 sends you off to a freezing mountain, a war-torn city, and even a tropical paradise. There is no shortage of pretty sights to see in Uncharted 2. Everything looks incredible. The character animations in particular are extraordinary. Without a doubt, Uncharted 2 has some of the most realistic graphics ever seen in a video game.
Uncharted 2 has a huge variety of environments.
The story was a big problem in the first Uncharted. It all seemed forced, and rather pointless. To say the least, Uncharted 2 fixes these problems. The story is great. Nothing seems forced at all. The pacing also is coordinated with the gameplay perfectly. The story is very reminicent of an Indiana Jones movie. It's fun, fresh, and has some great twists. The characters in Uncharted 2 are great. They're more fleshed out than ever. Uncharted 2 features some of the best characters ever seen in a video game. The fantastic voice acting helps this of course. Nolan North leads a team of some of the best voice actors in video games. Between the great story, characters, and voice actors, Uncharted 2 is one of the most cinematic game ever made.
Uncharted 2 has some of the best characters ever seen in a video game
All that being said, Uncharted 2 is not perfect. While the gameplay is great, it can get tiring towards the end of the game. Killing wave after wave of enemy just starts to get a tad bit dull. However, as soon as it might start to get dull, Uncharted pulls a crazy stunt to instantly get you immersed again. Also, Chapter 20 is just awful. It takes out everything that makes Uncharted 2 great. Besides those things, I have very few complaints about Uncharted 2. Uncharted 2 makes very few mistakes without playing it safe.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is one of the best games of this generation. It's not just a game, it's an experience. Between the stellar gameplay, gorgeous graphics, fantastic characters, and terrific voice acting, Uncharted 2 is one of the best sequels in recent years. It takes everything its predecessor did right and expands on it, while taking everything it did wrong and correcting it. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a game everyone should play. It truly is on of the best games in recent years.
