Alien: Isolation Brings Franchise Back To Its Horrific Roots

Creative Assembly's new Alien title, announced today, dials down the action in favor of the tense horror of the original Ridley Scott film.

Unlike many past games in the franchise, Isolation isn't about running and gunning - in fact, it's an experience more like Amnesia than AvP.

"Games in the past have looked at James Cameron's 'Vietnam in space' angle, but people haven't really dived into the wealth of the original source of Alien."

As a result, it's more of a survival horror game, casting the player as Ellen Ripley's daughter Amanda Ripley, who's being stalked by a single, fearsome xenomorph in the Sevastopol Station as she's on a mission to find out what happened to the Nostromo, the ship from the original Alien.

Using very limited weapons and the iconic motion tracker, you'll be much more the mouse than the cat. From what we've seen, it looks like the Alien game that's most true to the spirit of the series, and should hopefully help right the franchise's ship after its recent struggles.

  • Incoming comments about Colonial Marines
  • If you look on the main page, this article is right above the article for "Evolve" and the images are almost identical lol
  • It's horrific roots being...? I guess those games must have been pretty bad, especially to horrify its audience.
  • If they can make this game tense and filled with horror, rather than just endless shooting, then I'll give this game a chance. I'm hoping they do good with it.

  • Awesome! This is the kind of Alien game I've been waiting for

  • Please be good, please be good, please be good, please be good please be good.

  • I didn't touch A:CM thankfully, but this games looks hot. Hopefully its not another hyperbole bold face lie lol. But yeah, I'll wait for reviews, but if it sticks, this could be one wild ride!

  • So it's Outlast Aliens: The Second Day?
  • It already looks better than Colonial Marines. Gearbox doesn't deserve another chance anyway.
  • That alien needs way more drool just pouring from it's mouth.
  • It's awesome to see triple-A games learn from indie titles, since a lot of those ideas would be AMAZING with proper budgets thrown at them. And bravo to Sega, just for attempting a new AAA survival horror game anyway -- too many publishers think this genre isn't worth it, because action games & shooters make more money (to be fair, they already tried going that route though). This looks really promising, story hooks aside (where did Amanda come from? And wouldn't her last name NOT be Ripley? Or is she another clone, like from Resurrection?). I've enjoyed Creative Assembly's previous diversions from strategy - Spartan: Total Warrior was super fun, for instance. Hoping this turns out well; join the GOOD Sega Aliens' games like Aliens Infestation instead of joining stuff like Aliens Colonial Marines.
  • At least they are taking a different approach, the run and gun aspect wasn't working.

But the feeling of being hunted by the Xenos might be something worthwhile. I like that they have the idea of making this a survival horror instead of just gunning them down. U hope this turns out good for the franchise sake.

Aliens desperately needs a good game, we can all hope that it will be better than Colonial Marines.

  • Pass. Picking up a huge machine gun and ripping Aliens apart with it is the only thing I want from an Alien game. Alien was a good movie but come on, Aliens is the movie we all watch over and over.
  • I don't want to get too excited about this, but that looked amazing. I don't know if my little heart can handle it though, I was scared just from the video lol.

  • Its another cross gen game.
  • Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice? Yeah, that's not gonna happen.
  • Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice...

Then again I wasn't fooled by CM, since I've never been into the Aliens franchise.

  • As long as Gearbox keeps their moronic hands off I'll look forward to seeing how this turns out.

  • Hopefully it turns out better then colonial Marines.

  • Most of these comments are why I hate companies like Gearbox. They're writing this game off before it's even had a chance because Gearbox screwed the last Aliens game up so bad. This is a whole new company people. It'd be like saying Arkham Asylum was going to suck before it came out because there had never been a good Batman game before. At least give the game a chance and don't assume because the d-bags at Gearbox couldn't produce a decent game that wasn't called Borderlands no one can.
