Infamous Second Son

Sucker Punch Shares More Intel On Infamous: Second Son

In the wake of the Second Son reveal, Sucker Punch producer Brian Fleming took to the PlayStation blog to give us a clearer understanding of what the game has to offer.

Rather than rejurgitate the information, we'll just post what Fleming had to say:

"Delsin Rowe is the star of Second Son, and you probably know someone like him: A 24 year-old who is absolutely convinced he’s destined for greatness; though so far that greatness has managed to elude him. He grew up just outside Seattle, where his great – if accidental – calling comes crashing into his life. After rescuing occupants from a fiery bus wreck, he discovers that he suddenly has the ability to direct, manipulate and even transform into… smoke. Could he have absorbed this power from one of the passengers he pulled from the wreckage?

"Setting the scene: It’s been seven years since the Cole McGrath episodes and the world has clearly changed. Anyone showing signs of being a so-called “bio-terrorist” is immediately handed over to the Department of Unified Protection (DUP) — a government agency created to ensure there is never a repeat of the catastrophic events of Empire City and New Marais. So Delsin, who has never been particularly respectful of authority, finds himself caught in the DUP dragnet – and decides he’s not going to go quietly.

"Along the way, Delsin is going to ask questions that are not just relevant to the world of Second Son – but to the world we all live in today. A world where we are often instructed to surrender our freedoms to help improve our security. Ben Franklin once wrote “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Is he right?

"As you play Second Son, you’ll explore lots of Seattle’s familiar landmarks. As with all games in this series, the path the gameplay and story take will depend on the decisions you make along the way. Of course, we are creating all these characters and locations at a remarkable level of detail – made possible by PS4. In fact, this trailer was produced in-house using our game engine – can you tell we’re having fun with the new GPU, tools, and our new VFX system?"

  • This is looking good so far, i'm just curious how sucker punch is going to explain the super power aspect now, because isn't there no conduits anymore? Or is this something different.
  • Looks great... but somehow I'm just not feeling it. I loved Infamous 2 and its ending.... but this less freedom to me. Maybe when I see more gameplay that will change... but right now... eh....

  • i already like the new character better than Cole. "Bald" and "Gravelly voiced" were not very distinguishing characteristics. That describes every marine from every game ever made in the last 10 years, just about. While this kid's most distinguishing feature is a hoodie, something that's not original either (Prototype and of course Assassin's Creed do it too), it's a marked improvement. I don't know what's up with Sucker Punch's character designers. Sly and Rocket were so effortlessly charming. Guess they're better at cartoony stuff than "realistic" fare. Infamous is still great; the characters and general personality/tone are just a little lacking is all. It would have been great if they cel shaded the whole thing; tried to make it look like a real comic book. Like Crackdown, or better yet, Ultimate Spider-Man for the Gamecube and PS2. Remember that? Man, that was awesome... Also, it's a little weird that this game is set in Seattle, a real world city, when they made loose interpretations of New York and New Orleans for the past two games. Something that is commendable by the way; real world cities were not designed to accommodate fun gameplay. I wish they wouldn't have set this in a real city. Definitely not the most exciting announcement from the Playstation Meeting, but Sucker Punch never disappoints and InFamous is always fun. Wanted to see something new from these guys, though. I also want to see Project Awakened get funding instead, but I guess I just can't have nice things. If you don't know what Project Awakened is, it's a different open world super hero game. It's being made by the ex-Midway and ex-EA Chicago guys at Phosphor Games. They're seeking funding for it right now on Kickstarter, and unlike Infamous (and Crackdown and Prototype...), you can make your own heroes AND POWERS. They've been working on it for a long time; this is from the Psi-Ops and Stranglehold team, and if Midway didn't fold, this would've come out after that game as, "Hero". It's also powered by Unreal 4. Check it out here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1312036782/project-awakened And pledge money to that!
  • Yowzers! This looks amazing! Very interesting. Gonna keep my eye out for this one.

  • Bamf! (Both meanings, hopefully.)

  • I am actually excited for this game. It looks wonderful.

  • I guess the only way for this game to make any sense is if the Evil Cole failed to take over the world and the D.U.P is wiping out the conduits. Kinda bad but good to have a sequel. If it's half as good as Infamous 2 then I'll be in line day one.

  • I hope this will be GI's cover story soon

  • Please, please, please, Sucker Punch. Don't take away the Improved Static Thrusters.

  • Dear Matt,

    I'm sure you meant 'regurgitate'...

  • Well if u go off the good ending. U can say the conduit gene happens again. The RFI killed all of yhe conduits that wrre on the planet. Whos says conduits cant happen again. Or gov't testing. I dont know. Just throing ideas out. Seven years. Alot can happen in seven years

  • so far so good

  • The PS4 is gonna be awesome

  • Oh, wow... between this and Killzone I'm just about itching for the holidays. Definitely like how they're using a new element this time around. About time, to be honest.

  • hmm well sense this takes place in Seattle this means there is still a good possibility that cole survived i mean you dont put a lightning bolt at the end of infamous 2 if you dont want the main character to come back alive

  • I hope this a launch title.

  • Smoke....hugh?

  • Awesome series.  Really looking forward to this game.
