The lights are on
We've all been making our way from World 1-1 to Bowser's final castle in Super Mario Bros. since 1985, but have you ever wondered how far that is?
Nick Greene over at Mental Floss decided it was a worthy pursuit, and started doing some calculation. By estimating Mario's height, calculating the length of his stride, and then using that metric against the length of the entire game (measured by stitching together screenshots from the game), Greene arrived at two calculations, which you can find here. One measures the distance run and leaped without taking any shortcuts, or exploring any bonus levels, and another factors in those elements.
The number is actually smaller than I thought it would be, but Mario is no slouch for being able to sprint it in its entirety.
