The lights are on
Update: Sega has weighed in on the rumors of a 2015 Sonic game headed for Wii U, Xbox One, and PS4. The publisher has identified the information as "incorrect."
Senior community manager Kellie Parker shared the news on the Sega forums. "The recent information coming out of Nuremburg Toy Fair was incorrect," she writes. "SEGA has yet to announce details of upcoming console video games for Sonic the Hedgehog, or further details regarding the new Sonic CG TV series." A similar statement was provided to Eurogamer.
Sega and Nintendo are currently two games into a three-game exclusivity deal, which has so far included Sonic: Lost World, and the most recent pairing with Mario for a winter olympic game title. If this information were to be true, an intermediary Nintendo-exclusive title would be missing from the list.
Sonic has had a rough few years. His latest action outing, Lost World, didn’t do so well last year on Wii U or 3DS. Sonic Generations didn’t fare much better in 2011. But it’s not all bad news.
Sonic Colors was a competent platformer, and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed gives Mario a run for his money. It looks like the blue blur is getting another chance at multiplatform success next year.
Fan site Spindash captured the image above of a poster touting a 2015 Sonic title on Wii U, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Of course, we have no idea yet what type of game this might be.
Will it try to redeem the series’ often unsuccessful 3D platforming? Will it be another kart racer? Perhaps with the success of 2D platformers like Rayman Legends, we’ll see a return to classic Sonic horizontal speed.

Our TakeWhile I’ve never been hooked by Sonic’s gameplay, I hold out hope that Sega is able to deliver for fans. And if this 2015 game happens to be a new kart racer, you can count me in. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed has set a high bar for Mario’s upcoming release.
