Report: Valve Set To Release Virtual Reality Development Kit

In a new BBC report, a Valve designer says that the company is close to releasing new VR software development tools.

According to the BBC: "Valve designer Brian Coomer says the company is "days away" from releasing a VR software development kit that will give game makers a standard way to provide an interface for VR controllers."

Coomer said that the development kit will be released during Valve's Steam Dev Days on the 14th and 15th of this month. Valve intends the tools to make it easier to work with new VR headsets like the Oculus Rift. He says that Valve is also working on technology related to head-tracking and headset manufacturing and design.

Our Take:
I was initially skeptical of the Oculus Rift based on my experience with an early version of the hardware. While I haven't had a chance to try out any of the new models, everyone I know who has seems to say very positive things. And, the momentum on the business side seems to be progressing as well, as evidenced by Valve's keen interest in supporting the hardware.
