Microsoft Isn't Being Specific About Xbox One Sales

This morning, we reported that Sony had pushed past the 2.1 million mark. Microsoft has now shared its own response to sales since the November 22 launch.

“We are humbled and gratified by the overwhelming response from our fans to the launch of Xbox One," said Microsoft corporate vice president of strategy and marketing Yusuf Mehdi in an emailed statement. "Eleven days in we are seeing record breaking sales and are selling every Xbox One we can make. Demand is far exceeding supply in the 13 countries we’ve launched and we are sold out at retailers around the world. We are seeing incredible usage from our engaged fans who have purchased Xbox One with more than 50 million hours spent on Xbox One games and entertainment.”

The Xbox One launched in 13 territories simultaneously, with more coming in 2014. The PlayStation 4 rolled out in 32, with North America leading the way on November 15, 2013, and the remainder coming on November 29, 2013.

Our Take
It's telling that Microsoft hasn't revealed numbers for the Xbox One sales. We can infer that they aren't more than 2.1 million. Despite releasing in fewer territories (and units being sold out everywhere), Microsoft is going to be playing catchup over the coming months. Sony is projecting 5 million units sold by end of fiscal year (March 31, 2014). Where Microsoft will land at that point will be telling about the next-gen balance.
