Deal Struck To Re-Release Wasteland 1 In All Its Retro Glory

Brian Fargo's inXile entertainment is about to reduce you to a thin red paste. The developer has a struck a deal with EA to bring the original Wasteland to digital platforms.

According to an update on the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter page, once the game has been tested to work with contemporary hardware and operating systems it will be released into the wild. Backers of the Wasteland 2 campaign will get it for free. It will also be available on GOG.com and Steam.

Wasteland was originally released in 1988 for Apple II, Commodore 64, and MS DOS. Because of the memory issues inherent in those systems, a printed book was used to help tell the story. Players were told to read paragraphs at certain times during the game, and it's hard not to imagine that a PDF will accompany the re-release.

Our Take
Wasteland was a groundbreaking game that set the stage for the Fallout series and other RPGs of its ilk. Its dialog and unique companion book make it stand out as an important title in PC gaming history.

Whether Wasteland holds up after 25 years doesn't matter. Even if you just dive in for a taste, understanding where Fallout and, of course, Wasteland 2 come from is exciting historical perspective.
