The lights are on
With the Wii U posting anemic sales numbers, the calls for Nintendo to follow in the footsteps of Sega and leave the hardware business for multiplatform game development are increasing. However, Nintendo head Satoru Iwata says that it would be a move done for "short term profit."
In an interview with CVG, Iwata stressed that developing both hardware and software was fundamental to Nintendo's strength as a company.
"What I believe is that Nintendo is a very unique company, because it does its business by designing and introducing people to hardware and software," said Iwata. "By integrating them, we can be unique. And because we have hardware and software developers in the same building, they stimulate each other."
While the future of the Wii U is cloudy - especially given its recent sales - but one thing is clear: if Nintendo exits the home console business, it won't go willingly.

Our TakeAt this point, I'm very skeptical that the Wii U can recover and become a successful console. However, I think that Mr. Iwata is correct in many respects. Although they frustrate me at times, you can't argue with the success that Nintendo has had over the years, and I think that it's due in no small part to the fact that they control their own hardware and have consistently shown the ability to make the best games for their own systems. With the 3DS selling well, it's possible that the company could survive even a complete failure of the Wii U and still live to fight another day in the console business. However, the system after Wii U better not miss. I'm rooting for them - as strange as some of its decisions seem to me, I can't imagine a console business without Nintendo. Also, chasing multiplatform dollars has hardly transformed Sega into a mega-publisher.
I made a conscious decision to purchase all of my Wii U games at full price and never trade them in. I do not want to live in a world where Nintendo isn't making hardware! Nintendo IS, and will always BE, the greatest company in gaming today. Pikmin 3, The Last of Us, and Hotline Miami are the best games I've played this year. Nintendo makes one first party title and it stacks up with the greats without even trying. Animal Crossing on 3DS is just incredible.
nintendo will b ok they make there own games and systems that made some of gaming possible today the wii controller and wii fit board change the game the wii itself did really they just need to make there games better each time witch they do sometimes but if they can get support i say go for it
They'll be ok. They struggled through before plus they have the 3DS dominating right now.
Only a few games I really want to play. Can't rationalize buying a WIIU for just a handful of games. I just don't think the WIIU has wat it takes to be a player in this next Gen.
I still despise the name WIIU. Sounds like a term a child would use.
Sorry, I disagree at this point. They need to rethink their business model or at least have a branched off developer creating games from their franchise for other consoles with the way they're going. I started gaming with these guys, but they need to move on or move out.
The Wii U will survive. It's like shutting down Disneyland even after the roughest summer season ever. It's a brand name that'll never disappear, and struggles like this is why Nintendo's built up a war-chest to select from. If I agree with anything Matt says, it's that multi-platform hasn't helped Sega out any. Basically, the prospect of getting bought by Nintendo is probably the best thing that Sega could do next after Lost World. 1st parties is what Nintendo excels at and that's how they'll keep on chugging along.
The WiiU will not match the Wii...but that was lighten in a bottle.. The System will sell well when the games come out..same thing with the 3DS... Nintendo systems sell by first party games...and it will be a success if life time hits 55 million...
That's exactly what I expected. I'd never expect Nintendo to give up the fight. Nor would I want them too. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out, this time, next year, when the Wii U has a ton of great games and likely a price drop, and the PS4 and XBO are suffering from lack of titles in their early launch period.
i love the wii u they better recover
i see nintendo in their own battle. the wii made me realize this, they screwed up and they probably can't compete again for a while. the wii lacked the sheer power and now the wii u lacks it against the PS4 and XbOne.
watch, 8 wonderful games will smash the freeze the wii u has all over the world. winds of success will blow once more!
(Watch_Dogs, Mario Kart 8, Wonderful 101, Super Smash Bros, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, and Wind Waker HD were used in that pun.)
I say yes, and that it should stay that way.
