If you're an Xbox Live Gold member and you've been wondering what happened to your free Assassin's Creed II and Halo 3 you were promised during Microsoft's E3 conference, this news is for you. You'll be able to step into Ezio's first outing very soon.

Assassin's Creed II will be available as part of the Games with Gold program from July 16 through July 31. Claim your copy (via Xbox.com or the dashboard) during that window. If you miss it, your free copy is gone for good. As a reminder, even if you cancel your Gold subscription, you'll keep your games.

As a reminder, the first official Games with Gold title, Defense Grid: The Awakening, is available now. Microsoft also offered up Fable III in June as a special free bonus.

Our Take
We had lots of comments from readers feeling like Microsoft misrepresented which games were coming first. After reviewing the press conference, Assassin's Creed II and Halo 3 weren't promised as the initial entries, just that they'd be coming. Still, leading off with Defense Grid? Not really the oomph Microsoft needed to compete with free Battlefield 3 for PlayStation Plus members.
