The lights are on
The saga of The Phantom Pain, a game assumed by many to be
an elaborate joke created by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and Konami, is set
to get even weirder.
Okay, for those of you who haven't followed our previous
coverage of The Phantom Pain, here's the short version: A trailer for a new
game, apparently a psychological thriller, named The Phantom Pain, developed by
an unknown studio called Moby Dick Studios, was shown at the Spike VGAs. It
looked...odd. Soon, the NeoGAF video game forum started pointing out ties between
The Phantom Pain trailer and elements of the Metal Gear Solid series. This,
coupled with the fact that developers and staffers from Konami were spotted
wearing Phantom Pain t-shirts, led people to believe that The Phantom Pain was really
Metal Gear Solid V.
Konami and Kojima have both denied that this is true,
referring people to Moby Dick Studios for any questions about the game. Moby
Dick was said to be founded by a developer named "Joakim Mogren." At the time,
I searched the gaming database MobyGames and found no mention of any Joakim
Mogren. Basically, I, like everyone else figured this was just another bizarre
chapter in the mind of Hideo Kojima.
Today, things got a bit more interesting when GameTrailers
TV (and Spike VGAs creator) Geoff Keighley tweeted that he was going to be
interviewing a man who said he was Joakim Mogren. In a series of tweets,
Keighley said: "Joakim Mogren was a man I'm pretty sure I've not met before. He
did show some new images on his iPad...The guy was definitely not Kojima. He
legitimately seemed Swedish. And I'm skeptical if he is actually a game
Keighley also posted a picture of the man to Instagram (seen
above). As you can see, he's wearing bandages on his face, because that is
something that game developers who are real people often do.
The show airs tonight on Spike TV at 12 a.m. Central
Standard Time. Should be...interesting to say the least.
