As I sit here eating butterscotch chips and thinking about how much I love Peeta Mellark, I'm also reflecting on another of my obsessions: Kingdom Hearts.

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the Japanese release of Kingdom Hearts I, way back in 2002.  It's unbelievable to me that's it been ten years since that game came out (I was in seventh grade).  Where does the time go?

Anyway, this third edition of "Ali's Favorite Video Game Music" is dedicated to what I believe is the best music from the Kingdom Hearts series.  I usually include only one music track per blog post, but since this is a post in honor of an entire series with multiple award-winning soundtracks, I'm not going to beat myself up for not being able to narrow my choices down to just one song.

OK never mind, this is easily my favorite song of the entire series.  According to the internet, the French title means "Music for the Sadness of Xion," which is fitting since in 358/2 Days, [SPOILERS] Roxas' best friend, Xion, slowly goes crazy and is eventually taken mentally hostage, which means you have to put her out of her misery.  It's pretty *** up.  But the song is so gorgeous I can't stand it.  This version is from the second of two Kingdom Hearts Piano Collections albums, called "Field and Battle."

This is "The 13th Side," from the first Kingdom Hearts Piano Collections album.  It's Organization XIII's theme song, and was first used in the Kingdom Hearts I secret movies, "Another Side, Another Story," and "Deep Dive."  Side note: Blindfolded Riku was the hottest thing since any other kind of Riku.

And here's "Passion," the Japanese version of "Sanctuary," which was the theme song for KHII and 358/2 Days.  I think "Passion" is a much better song than "Hikari" ("Simple and Clean"), so it irks me that Square Enix has used "Hikari" for every other KH game. The decision to almost exclusively use "Hikari" for even current KH games may have something to do with Utada Hikaru's agent's insistence that she wasn't going to do any more original music for the series, but that was years ago (and I'm pretty sure I read it on Wikipedia or a forum or something), so then again, maybe not.

And finally, we have "Destati."  This version's from Yoko Shimomura's "Drammatica" album, which is a collection of some of her best work, performed and recorded by a live orchestra.  I happen to think Destati is equally as cool as "One Winged Angel," which I realize may sound blasphemous to some of you, but don't judge "Destati" until you hear this version.  It's both amazing and epic.

This doesn't encompass all of my favorite Kingdom Hearts songs (so be on the lookout for future posts dedicated to one or more different tracks), but it is a good start to a definitive "Ali's favorites" list.  Now I'd like to hear from you!  What are your favorite Kingdom Hearts pieces?  Least favorite (please someone say the themes from Wonderland and/or Deep Jungle)?
