Since the beginning of the year we have seen an amazing flow of game releases. The kind of games I am personally interested in have been abundant. I've enjoyed Gravity Rush 2, Nioh, Horizon ZD, Zelda BotW, and even the final Dark Souls 3 DLC. After a great start, I just haven't really been able to get into a new game. I thought I had simply played too many great games and I had just burnt myself out, but it turns out it was a very different problem.

Last night I finally started to play Nier: Automata. It's been on my shelf since the week it came out. I even put the game in my system that week so I could do the install, but for some reason I convinced myself that I had no interest in gaming at the time so I simply didn't play it. Turns out it is just the kind of game I needed to play to get me out of my rut.

Nier is different. Very, very different. It meshes many different genres into one experience and it does so successfully. The game starts as a top down shooter like 1942 or Twin Cobra. Next thing you know your ship transforms into a type of mech and the game takes on a more Geometry Wars kind of gameplay where you move with the left stick and shoot with the right. Then you reach your destination, exit the mech, and suddenly you're playing a third person shooter game mixed with hack and slash mixed with bullet hell. The crazy thing is it all actually works well. I've enjoyed plenty of great games this year, all with solid gameplay, but Nier has a kind of fast and frantic style gameplay that I simply haven't quite experienced before and I can't wait to jump back in for more.

Sometimes we all just need a breath of fresh air to get us back into something we love. Nier is shaping up to be the breath I was looking for and I'm glad I didn't leave this one in backlog purgatory. I know this is a short post, but if you are interested in Nier I will hopefully have more to say in the coming weeks. Thanks for reading.
