Many people today look back upon the Nintendo 64 with adoration. I’ve spoken to many gamers over the years which rank the system as one of their all time favourites, declaring their love for the many excellent Nintendo and RareWare titles the console... More
  • My Favourite Games of 2016

    5

So, another year has come and gone, and it went by ridiculously quickly. 2016 was an awesome year for me personally. I got a new job which I love, which is important because if we have to work we would all love a job we actually enjoy. I also finally, after 17 years of waiting, made my much anticipated trip to Japan. I've wanted to go since I was a child, but thanks to growing up with parents who could never afford to take me and my brother abroad on holiday, I never had the chance when I was young. And after a few years of saving up I went for two weeks and loved every second of it. 2016 was one of the slowest years as far as collecting goes, in terms of the amount of games I added to my collection. I bought less games in 2016 than I did in the previous four years, but that was mainly because I added some rather pricey games to my collection, so I probably spent just as much as I usually do. The additions I made to my collection were cool though, or at least I think so. It feels good to finally own a Neo Geo AES and an original copy Samurai Shodown II. I've owned an FZ-10 3DO for many years, but that was joined by an FZ-1 3DO in 2016, as well as Panzer Dragoon Saga for my Saturn and Snatcher for my Mega CD. It was also a fairly decent year for video games, even if I had little interest in some of the bigger releases. You won't find any love for Overwatch here, because aside from watching my brother play it on several occasions I have little interest in it. I lost serious interest in playing games online a decade ago now. That being said, there are a few other games in 2016 not listed here that I did enjoy, but I wanted to keep this list strictly to five games, so they have been omitted.

  • 10 More Games that Deserve to be Remastered

    1

The last blog I wrote was about ten games which I think actually deserve to be remastered, but my initial list was actually larger than those ten games. I decided to narrow it down to only ten because the blog was already pretty lengthy, and I had no intention of doing another because I didn't really think it was necessary. I thought I got my point across well enough the last time. But I've had a change of heart. I think the other games I chose and then abandoned actually do deserve to be mentioned; some of the the titles in this blog I actually prefer to ones which made my last. So after some consideration here are those other games.

The current generation of consoles has so far being a disappointment, at least in my opinion. Gamers have been treated to some great games; titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Bayonetta 2 are incredible gaming experiences worthy of anyone's time and money, but in general I've found the current generation lacking compared to the past purely because it doesn't feel like we're getting enough new, compelling software. We're three years into the life spans of both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, by this point in a generation the consoles should be at the peak of their power and success, delivering the kind of games developers promised us all right at the very beginning. At this point last generation we had already received titles like BioShock, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Gears of War, Super Mario Galaxy, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Halo 3 and countless others - games that all went on to either define their console or define the entire generation as a whole. But so far this generation it feels like we'll never reach that point. This generation isn't becoming know for it's amazing games and new franchises, it's becoming infamous for the amount of remasters that are hitting store shelves.

  • My Favourite Games of 2015 [Edited]

    3

2015 was widely hailed as a brilliant year for video game software, but in truth I had to limit my spending throughout the year, and as a result I skipped a lot of games in favour of others. So if a game you loved is missing from this list it may very well be because I haven't got around to it yet. That said, I enjoyed the majority of the new released I played in 2015 On a personal level it was a year of RPGs for me. I played so many RPGs in 2015, both new and old, that I'd wager I spent mover 1500 hours playing that single genre alone. Just thinking of how many hours I spent playing games in total hurts my brain.

  • Chrono Trigger at 20.

It's quite fitting that Chrono Trigger, Square's acclaimed role-playing masterpiece, was released right at the very end of its console generation. The fourth generation had a lot of heavy hitters, and many gamers look upon the period as the greatest era in the history of console gaming. The Super Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive lasted for quite a while after the Saturn and PlayStation rocked up on the scene, but Chrono Trigger's release in North America in August 1995, just eighteen days before the historic launch of Sony's PlayStation in the same region, came just as the very system it was designed for was about to become obsolete. In many ways Chrono Trigger was a fitting send-off not just for the Super Nintendo, but that entire console generation as a whole.

Wow. 20 years already! My memories of the PlayStation start sometime back in 1996. I’m not exactly sure to the day, or even the month, when we got ours, but I know it was definitely 1996 because not long after we bought it my dad gave me Crash Bandicoot... More
