  • A Satisfying Mix of Order Anarchy

RAGE. Not only do I resist the urge even now to make puns about that name, but I am amazed to say that it defies almost every expectation you have about it. If you told me I'd have some of the freshest fun in an singleplayer open world post-apocalypse game, I'd have laughed in your face. Now, all I can do is hope we someday get a sequel.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown. You've only got yourselves to blame 2K -- or I guess, more accurately, Firaxis. Or you know what, even more accurately, XCOM fans. You all had to complain about a perfectly good game that could have provided some variety to the shooter genre and potentially been a great hybrid built by talented developers who had already shown they had the creative chops to really push themselves and the brand. But no, everything must be the exact genre it was upon creation. I mean it's not like any game has ever been one genre or scenario then became another... like... Deus Ex... Halo... Halo Wars... Team Fortress 2... Half-Life 2... Portal 2... Mass Effect... Star Wars: Battlefront... Star Wars: 1313...

Just Cause 2 is not a serious game. It's not a game for high minded individuals who think games are art. This is a game built like the long gone days where PC games didn't actually have to have DRM, where writing was an afterthought, and ninjas were standard upgrades to the regular hired help.

  • Can Metro 2033 Survive the Nuclear Winter?

    2

Metro 2033 is one of those games that you just couldn't have expected, primarily because it barely had any PR before THQ finally published it. It was another game set in a post-nuclear war world, this one so grim and dark that the only habitable locations are buried deep underground. The question was, and for the readers asking me to review this, is simply if the novel turned game actually works.

  • A Wipeout Indeed

WipEout(R) 2048* is the first and (so far) only entry of the Sony racing franchise on PS Vita. It was one of the launch titles, and also offered both a chance at trying multiplayer on the Sony handheld and cross-play with the PS3 WipEout titles. It would be like Resistance: Fall of Man before it -- the testing grounds of new ideas and innovations while clinging to the familiar.

  • Dazed and Confused

Gravity Rush (sometimes Daze, sometimes Shift) is a perplexing title. It's supposed to take elements from JRPGs, sandboxes, and platformers, yet basically seemed at first like inFamous but with gravity bending. The demos and trailers looked promising. Sure, the game sounded a bit quirky and weird and had some obviously "oh Japan" elements in it, but you know, it should be a fun game...

  • A Light at the End of the Tunnel

Yes, ironic isn't it? If I got a dollar for every time I said Uncharted was a soulless husk kept alive by hype, I'd be a rich man. And yet, here I stand, giving the portable entry an 8/10. This may seem like madness, this may seem like fantasy, but caught in this landslide of good ideas, there's no escape from reality.

  • Maybe Mythical, But Not Legendary

Almost, and it kills me to say that.

Rayman Legends. The sequel to the much acclaimed and utterly masochistic Rayman Origins . Formerly a Wii-U exclusive, now freely available to everyone except 3DS and Wii gamers. Is it worthy of being called a legend? Is it even worth buying? Has Michal... More

Killzone 3. With a divisive sequel that abandoned core ideas while adding new ones just a few years behind it, what Killzone 3 would become is anyone's guess. Would it change the formula again? Would it be more modern or more old school? Or would... More
  • A Disgrace to The Helghast

    2

Killzone had a rough start on the PS2. Plagued with glitches and bugs inherent to how it was basically Guerrilla's attempt to make a PS3 game for the PS2, getting a second shot seemed unlikely. Five years after the original console release, the only thing of note besides that was a PSP game, Killzone Liberation. Killzone hopefuls were so excited and highly praised the game back around release.

  • Can Mass Effect 3 Hold The Line?

Mass Effect 3. Probably one of my biggest challenges to date on this blog is trying to write a review for this game. I've faced Sovereign and the Collectors without fear. I've turned down the Illusive Man's temptations. I kept everyone alive after the Omega-4 Relay. But nothing could prepare me for what was to come in Bioware's finale to what may be one of the biggest franchises to mark this console generation.

  • A Dishonorable Discharge

Medal of Honor was a big deal back during the Playstation One era. It was what Call of Duty is today, and helped inspire hundreds if not thousands of WWII centered games. EA wanted to reboot the series in the modern era though, and went with a series focused on Tier 1 operatives and taking actual missions from US military campaigns and interviews with the men and women who served in them. The hope was to make it be more authentic than Call of Duty. It would be a series grounded in realism, authenticity, and first hand accounts of what war is really like.
