THE BEST VIDEO GAME EVER MADE!... EVER!!
The World Ends With You (Nintendo DS/2007/Square-Enix/Team Jupiter) is the greatest video game ever made! Do I really need to say more?? ... Yes?... Well.... The World Ends With You (TWEWY) is the first JRPG I ever played whose setting is finally removed from the typical medieval-type setting and dropped into our modern world. That concept alone, is totally awesome! Instead of armor, rations and magic your characters use trendy threads and style brands, fast food and psyche-enabling pins to boost your strength or effect your surroundings. The style, artwork and music in this game are all amazing. In one word, it's Urban. Heavy outlines, hard-edged design and grafitti-art make up the visuals of TWEWY. In terms of music, a variety of awesome, hot beats are played throughout, whether in combat, field or cut-scene settings ranging from techo to punk; Jpop to new age and funk. A huge effort was made casting the soundtrack for this game, all of which are in-game collectibles as well. A lot of thought also went into making this game feel like you're in the bustling Shibuya district of Tokyo. From The Scramble, to Dogenzaka, Udagawa and Miyashita Park, this amazing game takes place in the greatest city in the world! Tokyo! The story is unique and compelling (especially given the modern setting), the characters well developed, and Neku is the best protagonist I've ever played in a game! Another key feature of TWEWY is its unique style of gameplay. TWEWY makes full use of the DS' capabilities with their patented Stride-Cross Battle System. Neku fights on the bottom screen while his partner (either Joshua, Shiki or Beat) fights on the top screen. You control both characters in combat simultaneously! Neku using the stylus, and his partner by mashing the A/B/X/Y buttons (or d-pad if you're a righty.) Sound tough? No worries! The built-in Auto-Play feature works great, letting you slowly get used to playing both characters, and the players' Sync attacks are SO sweet!! Sound amazing? Yes! Radical? Well duh! Magical? Well... that depends on how deeply you get into it, and how attached to the characters you become. Though one of the lesser-known titles from Square-Enix, it's definitely worth playing if you haven't. When you do, you will agree, there is no gaming character more awesome than Neku Sakuraba. CLICK HERE for a co-reviewed blog on TWEWY by myself and the amazing GIO hero, Stranger! This was a really fun review he and I worked together on Summer 2012 and should provide some additional detail on the overall awesomeness of TWEWY! If finding the original proves difficult, you can also look into these more recent releases:
The World Ends With You: Solo Remix (iOS/2012/Square-Enix) is a mobile remake of the above 2007 classic available for Apple iPhone and iPad. With improved HD sound and graphics, some new tunes and a revised game mechanic that fits the single touch screen of the iPhone or iPad, Solo Remix is a great new way to experience the greatest video game in the world! I have neither iPhone nor iPad (yet...) having yet to partake of this amazing-looking remake, though my gut says, missing the Stride-Cross Battle System is missing a big part of what makes this game so fantastic... Although... the improved graphics and sound would definitely take experiencing this game to a whole new level! I can't wait to play!
The World Ends With You: LIVE Remix (iOS/Android/2013?/Square-Enix/GREE) is late! Slated for a Winter '13 release, we're now well into Spring... LIVE Remix will be a TWEWY mobile social game! Imagine gaming with other Neku fans to defeat Noise from your mobile device... then imagine the coolness of being able to play the game, in real time with others on your device in the ACTUAL places the game takes place in... Shibuya!!! So cool!!! That will be the case for players in Tokyo! There is supposed to be an English version coming out... I'll update news as I fnd out about it myself. When this one happens, I will finally breakdown and get a real mobile phone! I must admit I LOVE the mobile-direction TWEWY has taken since it's original Nintendo DS release (even if I can't play any of these app games yet because I don't have the hardware). Given that Neku's mobile phone is his link to the Reapers' Game, it's only natural this series should evolve using YOUR phone as your gateway to the UG.
Finally, checkout this title for TWEWY-character crossovers:
Kingdom Hearts: Dream, Drop, Distance (Nintendo 3DS/2012/Square-Enix/Disney Interactive) is the first title to feature a cameo crossover of characters from TWEWY. This game was the reason I bought a Nintendo 3DS! I am a huge Sora fanboy, and I love Kingdom Hearts! Crossing over two of my favorite titles and characters...?? YES! Aside from the magic of seeing Neku and Sora having to work together in the same game (their characters are so different!), the 3-D rendering is absolutely beautiful and the music and mini story made for this level of Kingdom Hearts was a fantastic nod to TWEWY's story and brand. The crossover is featured in the first level of play in Traverse Town, right when you begin the game. Neku, Joshua, Shiki, Beat and Rhyme all visit the world of Kingdom Hearts! This may be one of the greatest moments in gaming history!

One of the things I love most about TWEWY is its art style and how it penetrates every inch of the game. And Neku is such an awesome hero!
Gaming Progress: I've got way too many going at once, and not a whole lotta game time on average... The hardest games to keep going are the epics like, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Ocarina of Time 3-D I'm currently "playing" and haven't finished... Kingdom Hearts (PS2 original) and Dream, Drop, Distance... I need like 1-2 hour blocks of time to get more into these stories and games, but lately sessions have been more like 30-40 min. shots... good for Mario and rhythm games, not so good for Link and Sora... I play Theatrhythm everyday now during my lunch break at work... I love this game!

I am playing Digimon World DS right now! I haven't played Dawn (2007), Dusk (2007) or Championship (2008) because the original Digimon World DS came as the highest recommended title to play, so I picked-it-up (at considerable cost...) and started playing. Since 2008, nothing Digimon has really made it to North America for sale. In 2012, Digimon World Re:Digitize launched for the PSP in Japan, and this year ('13) Re:Digitize was revamped for the 3DS (also in Japan). And a new game, Digimon Adventure, launched for the PSP this year in Japan as well! Will any of these see a Stateside release?? Who knows... but I'm hopeful the 3DS Digimon Re:Digitize Recode might... The market here for Digimon is... limited... but starved... For whatever reason Digimon ends up like "pearls before swine" in the U.S. market. The bulk of American gamers' only resource is online MMORPGs like Digimon Battle and the more recent Digimon Masters... Sadly, my laptop is WAY too crappy to play these games, so I'm with Digimon World DS right now.

Awesome fan art of Quartzmon's final form with Tagiru Akashi our newest gogglehead from the Boy Hunters arc of Digimon Xros Wars. I love Tagiru, and look forward to seeing more fan art incorporating Xros Wars heroes with the rest of the Digimon crew. Yes, Xros Wars (especially the Boy Hunters arc) has some flaws... especially in pacing... but as a fanboy, I look more towards the things I like about the season. And Tagiru is pretty cool...
