I hope you find happiness in something though man, I imagine youre going through quite an emotional woodchipper...and I imagine thats quite an understatement. You asked about my union story , sorry it took so long to get back to you . I've been working in construction since I was 18 , I started out working for a non-union concrete company . I started out as a laborer at 8 bucks an hour , big money lol . After 2 years I was making 10 bucks an hour , and had learned how to tie rebar , which I was doing almost exclusively ( rebar is the steel that goes in concrete foundations for strength ) . The third year I was the rebar foreman for this company , after the job I asked for a raise . I was told no , that I was still considered to be just a laborer and they didn't want to price me out of a job .That didn't set well with me , so I called up a buddy who had worked with me a year before , and had quit to go work for the union . Three weeks later , I started working for the Ironworkers Union at 30 dollars per hour . Because of my previous experience tieing rebar , I was able to skip the 3 year apprenticeship program and buy my journeyman book ( 700 dollars well spent ) . After 3 months I qualified for benefits ( you need 600 hours ) , life and health insurance , annuity , pension , and vacation pay ( 3 dollars for every hour you work paid every 3 months ) . The health insurance is some of the best around and includes full dental and vision ( 2 pairs of 200 dollar glasses per year for everyone in my family ) . The hospital bill when my daughter was born was $29,000 , my portion zero .Anyway , I've been in the union over 11 years now , I am a foreman making 36 dollars per hour , with a 14 dollar per hour benefits package . I primarily build bridges and overpasses , but occasionally we will build the foundations for large buildings , or parking garages . The longest bridge I've worked on was 1,900 feet long , and 8 lanes wide + sidewalks , I think it was about 150 feet wide . The biggest non-bridge project I've worked on was a series of 10 buildings that covered 10 square city blocks in downtown San Jose Cali . I was there for 3 years . I love my job , the more intricate and challenging the better . The only downside is the traveling , sometimes the job can be over 5 hours from home , though the average is about 1 and a half . We get 100 dollars a day subsistence if we have to travel more than 100 miles from home , so the only bad thing is not being with your family during the week sometimes . Still I made over $80,000 last year , and my wife doesn't have to work so it's worth it . Hope this answers your question , sorry if I rambled . Feel free to hit me up with more questions if you're curious .

Sorry to hear about your Grandpa man .
