Sea dogs, rogue mariners, chasers of the wind, whatever you call them, pirates have never seen much love from video games and especially not lately. Sure, they have been used in some titles recently (and I use “recently” very loosely), Risen 2 and Sid Meier’s Pirates! come to mind (and Far Cry 3, but those modern pirates don’t really count in my book. Give us 1800s, wooden sailing vessel pirates!). Outside of those few titles and classics like The Secret of Monkey Island and Skies of Arcadia, you’d be hard pressed to name any games recent or past that focus on pirates. Well, video game industry, I’m going to do you a favor and describe some elements that I would want in a pirate video game.

I stepped in from the unseasonably warm winter night, sliding my ID into my jeans pocket. The walls, a huge Insert Coin(s) logo scrawled across them, thrummed to a musical rhythm from the room beyond. My friend Cory followed after me, a grin across his face like a kid in Disney World. While waiting in line to pay the cover charge, I looked out the front window at the late night street beyond, pondering what had brought us here. More

In part one, I discussed why I was cautiously optimistic for a new Star Wars trilogy backed by Disney. In part two, I give my thoughts on what should and should not be done based on the numerous examples of failure with which Disney and Lucas Film have had experience. More

When I learned that Disney had bought Lucas Film, I was very surprised. I thought that George Lucas would take his creation to the grave. That he would allow anyone (other than himself) to mess with his beloved franchise was astonishing to me. Since the deal was announced I’ve taken the time to think it over and decided that I am cautiously optimistic for the future of Star Wars. More

Most of us can remember a time when we heard about something, maybe a movie, a book or a game, and everybody else seemed to be talking about it as if it were the best thing since sliced bread. No matter what you think about some product and no matter how “unbiased” you might consider yourself, when a human being hears a lot of buzz for a film, novel, video game, etc. expectations are heightened or lowered. It happened with Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Firefly, Mass Effect, Halo, and it is likely happening now for a whole slew of other intellectual properties. All these forms of media were hyped before and after their release. Hype is when expectations and anticipation is created for a given product.
