Are you fans of Anime or are you scared its going to put a blemish on the face of Halo? I personally like what I am seeing so far. While Im not fond of the idea of no MC that could be good. I noticed there are only two types of ships really.....well...one. While I would love to see Harvest in a true sense and not like halo wars where you spend a few levels there and jump away. I think that would be interesting in the line of prequels, but more interesting is what happens now that the covenant prophets have been killed. Something tells me the brutes arent so easily dismayed. I recently watched the trailer for it and I have to say it is the one that is garnering my attention, mainly because Ive always wondered about the sangheili(spelling) as a race and not just the warrior elites. The seafaring idea would be very nice to see, even if just in a graphic novelization or perhaps another animated film.

Re: Halo Legends

I think 343 understands what they are taking on here. Waypoint has been a great addition to the ways we collect our Halo knowledge so I think they know what they are doing. It will be interesting to see what the next game will be like if 343 and Microsoft Studios does it. I still think that Microsoft knows how much this franchise is worth and that they would not spoil it in any way.

I was interested as well in "The Duel" episode but I was a bit confused by it. I originally thought that Elites were a seafaring race who were similar to pirates. It is in one of the books. I want to say "Ghosts of Onyx" but I am not sure. I would imagine that the culture shown in "The Duel" is that of the Elites after they became part of the covenant. After they had evolved further. I would like to see a depiction of a seafaring Elite race in something like Halo Legends. Would be pretty cool.

Re: Halo Legends

I have no idea. Sorry to add somethign that has nothing to do with origins, just want to see if people think the package was one of the better ones or if it wasnt the greatest. While we may not want cortana to fall in rampancy(crazy same difference) her seven year life cycle is pretty much up. Master Chief is about to land on a strange planet and cortana is losing her marbles.

Re: Halo Legends

Well I agree with the assessment that Cortana is becoming rampant and as Mike stated, it is a 7 year lifespan, I have to disagree that she will fall into rampancy the same way other AIs inevitably do.

Cortana can not be compared to other AIs for one simple fact. Cortana is able to openly express her feelings and react to them based on experience. As stated again by Mike, basically, not being human or not being able to be emotional is a cause of rampancy. Now I would have to argue that without emotions AIs begin to wonder what their purpose is and why they are here, and this continues their downfall into rampancy. But here in lies the difference between other AIs and Cortana.

Cortana expresses her emotions whenever she "feels" like it. Cortana is not looking for why shes here or what her purpose is, she already knows. Master Chief is her rhyme and reason and this is why I believe that Cortana will not enter a rampant stage that is uncontrollable. Boredom will be a problem as they drift through space but Cortana knows better than any AI what is lurking in her shadow. She is an already emotional AI and that makes the difference. If emotion is a sign of rampancy I would have to think that shes been insane this entire time.

Of course this is all theory based on other AIs, mostly Sif and Mack as well as the fact that I think the series would suffer a bit with the loss of Cortana. Cortana knows her purpose and as long as The Chief is alive, Cortana will not lose this purpose.

And I agree with Mike that the planet at the end of Halo 3 is the Forunner home world. The maze like designs on the surface would suggest Forunner.

Halo Legends

lets see: first it was captain keyes, then his daughter, then sergeant johnson, and soon to be cortuna. oh wait... i am forgetting doctor harsley and the other spartans. and he is suppose to be lucky.

I said in a normal situation, meaning if Cortana and the MC were back on Earth or some other place where she could be evaluated on her condition, then she would be decommissioned. That's just a fact. A smart AI (such as Cortana) is not allowed to live past her 7 year life cycle. It's just too dangerous to allow a smart AI get that close to rampancy because in a number of situations a smart AI could kill an entire crew aboard a battle cruiser or prowler (other situations I could mention, but there's no need). She's is completely alone. We don't know how long it will be until she needs to wake MC (days/weeks/months/years). HOWEVER, when she does wake him, MC will be in for quite a surprise when he finds his very close friend in the state she will be in.

And it isn't a question of IF she is going rampant because she IS. That's fact.

Think back to Marathon days. If you know the story you know what I'm talking about. Things are going to get very interesting when MC wakes, finds his close friend is friggin nuts AND he finds himself on the Forerunner home-world (if you watch the Legendary ending you see a planet, I will stake my extensive knowledge of the Halo universe that the planet is none other then the Forerunner home world...any takers?!)

Halo Legends

Cortana is a smart AI, and there isn't any other AI in the Halo universe anything even remotely close to her. Her thought process, likeness, and intelligence is based entirely off of the brain patterns of Dr. Halsey. Being as 'powerful' as Cortana is, she may be suffering from Rampancy, but she isn't going to 'die.' Bungie knows that she is a drawing force of the Halo series and that she is a primary character. She started going Rampant during the final events of Halo 2, when the Gravemind had her, but she still came back and was capable of communicating with Chief despite her falling apart after her time with Gravemind. She's not going anywhere, and her Rampancy is not going to kill or decommission her. Don't worry. Just like Master Chief, Cortana isn't going anywhere.

Halo Legends

Hrmmm...technically you're right. She is going "crazy." The correct terminology though is called rampancy. See a smart AI, such as Cortana, has limited memory that cannot be replaced. The more they [smart AI's] fill up their memory with data, the less space there is for processing thoughts. Rampancy occurs when the AI becomes consumed by its own interests and focuses its processing power entirely on itself, literally thinking itself to death. However, this "death" is not how you and I think of death. The AI does not simply stop existing. They just exist in a state that is no longer who there were.

Most common fundamental truths that lead an AI to rampancy include:

-That their mind is limited

-That life is short

-That they will never be human

Usually a smart AI is surrounded by people, so that once their 7 year life span has run its cycle, they AI will be decommissioned.

Cortana is all alone with the Chief, so there is no one to shut her off. When Chief wakes up...he's in for quite a surprise.

Halo Legends

A smart AI such as cortana only lives seven years. After this the smart AI's pretty much go crazy because there is so much information going on in there heads. At the end of Halo 3 cortana has actually been alive for seven years. In the episode origins they are hinting that cortana is starting to go crazy and die. She's not dead yet but may soon be.

This is supposed to make you think about the future of master chief. Who will wake him if cortana is dead. And what will Halo be like without cortana. Also what would cortana do in the fragile mental state she's in. Maybe she'll try and kill the chief by turning off life support. All speculation though. But the fact remains cortana is dying.
