The lights are on
You like shooters because you like the sense of power they give you. Few games are as skilled at making you feel like a competent warrior as Infinity Ward's Call of Duty series. Every bullet has a story. Take a moment and tell us a few of yours.
Just got MW2, played a few matches, got pwned, finally past lv. 4. I'm OK now, but any of you could probably demolish me, still.
Any tips for a noob?
EDIT: FYI, I do have FPS experience, having played Halo 3 for some time.
1 - Know your maps: Any experienced player will tell you this is the most important element of your game. As you play, when you get the chance, take a good look around. Every spot is in line of sight of from 10 other spots. No place is safe. (Every map has to have a few true corners, where the only entry point is directly in your line of sight, but when that is the case you're a sitting duck for explosives)
2 - Watch every kill cam: Take note of where and how you were killed. This of course helps you take revenge, and also gives you some insight on map layout and the variety of viable tactics. After you get better, you won't have to waste your time with this except for those occasional "WTF kills".
3 - Stop sprinting around corners: Unless you know the exact spot your target is at around a corner, if you're not aiming down your sights as you come into a new room (full of probably a dozen new lines of sight, any of which could be camped) you will die. Instead, break your sprint by looking down your sight and scan the room as it comes into view. This method gives you full situation awareness if properly combined with watching your radar and rule 4...
4 – Use your ears (and Ninja): If you have your sound coming through a headset or use surround sound (even a good 2.1 system), you can hear every single thing that goes on around you. Footsteps, reloads, silenced weapons, grenade pin pulls, it's all there to be heard and used against the person making the sound. Listen and you might hear footsteps... sounds like from 2 rooms over, moving in a certain direction then suddenly it stops. Using your knowledge of map layout (rule 1) you know the exact spot your enemy is very likely to have stopped at. If not stopped entirely, he's switched to crouching. Because you know he's crouching, he's obviously creeping into the next room checking corners, and not his rear. Because you're using ninja, you can sprint around unheard and invisible to his heartbeat sensor (if used) to his back and do as you please with him.
As for classes, that's entirely up to you. Every perk, weapon, attachment and equipment has a time and place. But... here are a couple good suggestions to get you started.
Lightweight: Marathon, Lightweight, Ninja
UMP w/Red dot, M93 Raffica w/Red dot, Stun grenade, Semtex
Unlimited lightweight sprint with the bonuses of Ninja pro for minimal detection. This particular setup is rounded out for any situation, but try tweaking your weapons and perk 3 for specific situations. For instance, Riot shield and .44 Magnum w/Tactical knife and Commando pro. The perfect flag runner. Or Akimbo Uzi and Steady Aim, the ultimate close range killer.
Assault: Bling, Stopping Power, Ninja
SCAR w/Holographic and Silencer, USP w/Akimbo and FMJ, Stun grenade, Claymore
As the description on assault rifles indicates, they are the all purpose weapon. The low profile your silenced weapon and ninja pro allow you to creep around and listen for the best time to strike. Claymores make a solid choice for this class, perfect for setting up defense on your flank or as a contingency for when you inevitably get pinned down on both sides. The claymore explosion (if it doesn't kill the guy in the first place) will let you know to direct your attention to that side.

- Play more! The more you play, the better you will be.
- Be patient. You will always get the same guy who is determind to kill you and sprint to you like 5 times before he realizes that he's not gonna killl you.
- Don't sprint everywhere and be like the guy i wrote about above.
- Pick a general area on a map and guard it. (better on smaller maps)
- Finally, I dont play for prestiege, so i only use like 3 guns and kill a lot with them.
Some of my favorite tips and tactics are....
1. adapt to your situation (example, use an smg for close range, sniper for long range, riot shield for capture the flag, rifle for team deathmatch)
2. Pick a spot to stay at, even though people watch killcam's, it's best not to go running around like a nudist at a beach.
3. I do this time and time again, I wait to long to kill someone allready in my sights, if you are sneaking up on someone, usually the best thing is to get the quickest most acurate kill you can. If there is one enemy, there will almost always be other tangoes by him. Do not teabag a guy standing in a corner, just get the quick kill instead of showboating with the throwing knife or trying to knife or stick him.
4. Use correct camo for your gun. If you are sniping in a artic environment, do not use urban camo. You will stick out like a red thumb and get shot down instantly. It is very important that you use the environment to hide yourself also. Try not to stand too close to windows, but stand back in the darkness.
5. Be ready. Always be aware of the sounds around you and constantly have a finger on your knife because even if someone has the advantege, you can still kill them with your reflexs.
Final notes. Choose your weapon loadout wisely and memorize the layout of the maps, Make sure you use your killstreak rewards as soon as possible before time runs out, and remember it's just a game so have fun!
Thanks all.

wow eyros well done *kudos*
the only other thing I'd add to these guys' advice Is to play with your buddies, not only does it make it more fun (well for me anyway, it's me n my boys every night!) but you really develop some good strategic skills together =)
GOOD LUCK!
Thanks again for all the tips, just an update on how I'm doing:
A couple days ago I tried out the riot shield class, and loved it. I created my own riot shield class, and am having fun with it. I usually take out individual enemies w/ the shield, or, if there are multiple enemies, I back away, taking the fire while my teammates take them out. I switch to a shotgun when my shield gets to cracked to see through.
Why? because I really enjoy that when someone starts shooting at you from someplace you don't know, the shield gives you a fighting chance to prevail, if you have good reflexes.
Definitely. If you don't watch the kill cam people can get you in the same spot repeatedly.
keep leveling Up and get the SCAR and when you get the HEARTBEAT SENSOR attach it its a good method
Have fun and remember: It's just a game. When you're getting anihilated in a match and you feel like you want to smash your TV, turn off the system and go have a Kit Kat.
i was gonna say the same as bishop. just have fun. don't worry about trophies or killstreaks or kdr. tho the other more practical advice is great too. lol
Thanks Karma, I hope you and anyone else got at least a little something out of it. If you're ever looking to play a few rounds send me a message. I play on 360, but with a couple friends buggin me to get it for PS3 too I'm on the fence.
UPDATE: A while ago, while I was still riot shielding, I decided to try my original custom class, AR w/Spas-12.
I entered the match, and was amazed with how much better my reflexes had gotten. I was getting kills all over the place! I decided that I would get many more kills with ARs then riot shields from that point on.
Then I unlocked the FAL. My friend had recommended it to me some time before, so I tried it. and loved it. I am now progressing far more speedily up the ranks, and am now at lvl. 36. I still use the Spas-12 as secondary.
I am really enjoying the FAL w/ACOG, thanks all.
I'm so glad your getting the swing of things, it's all about getting past the learning curves and having fun while your at it...nothings ever fun when it's aggravating! =o) dont give up completely on the riot shield, it's a BLAST to use in afghan or the other one with the tunnel, when your not doing so hot (well in hardcore anyway) it's amuzing to thump a few people here n there LOLOL ^.^
Ya I actually used the shield once today when my team was getting pwned in search and destroy (I almost planted the bomb when they weren't looking!) It was still a total blowout.
Anyway, I ran up to some guy in the plane (the map was Terminal) and thumped him once, so he ran, running right past a teammate with me chasing him, and I said "You better run!" as I thumped him to death. His teammate saw the whole thing and killed me. Everybody laughed hysterically.
