Final Fantasy X PS3 HD: Remake or Remaster?

  • Final Fantasy X is easily my favorite of the numbered Final Fantasies, probably because it was the first video game that I had my own file on. Needless to say I'm excited for a PS3 edition, even if it has to wait until after Versus XIII and KHIII. My question is do you think it'll be a Remake or a Remaster?

I've only ever played the basic US version so I'm hoping it's a Remaster but of the International version with the open Sphere Grid. What is everyone else hoping for? I just really don't want them to use the FFXIII battle system...

  • I liked the FFXIII battle system...

Its supposed to be an HD rerelease with no changes other than graphically.

They need to give it a date already...

  • Me too but I like Final Fantasy X's better. Plus I don't think it'd fit. Switching characters vs. changing paradigm's would be an odd problem. Yeah I've been looking for a date for awhile! But the developer's have already said that they want to focus on new projects first, hence the Versus and KH.

  • If it's just the exact same game with HD graphics, my instinct would be to say that it would be great, but the mechanics of FFX are kind of old, which is evidenced by the fact that there are almost no truly turn based RPG's anymore, so it might feel odd seeing modern graphics on a classic combat system, and if they change the mechanics, it could easily turn into a disaster. I think I'll probably just play my old PS2 copy if I feel like playing it again.

@Jason, that quote is very familiar, but I can't remember where it's from, I want to say something by David Eddings, but I'm not sure, so where is it from?

  • I like the turn based rpgs, so that won't be an issue for me. If it has new mechanics, it won't be very good...

  • I prefer turn based rpg mechanics, I just meant that if they keep the old mechanics it could lead to a feeling of a continuity error, like when they added computer generated images to the old Star Wars movies, seeing modern graphics on what was obviously an older movie broke away from the sense of wonder because their was a clear contradiction on screen. FF X had my favorite battle system out of all the Final Fantasies, but it might feel out of place with modern graphics.

  • FFX's battle system is easily my favorite of all Final Fantasies just because I love to micromanage haha. If they update the graphics and leave the system that'd be perfectly fine with me.

@Knapptime the quote is actually from FFX! Auron says it if you talk to him a couple times when you get to Rin's Travel Agency in Macalania, before fighting the Crawler. Idk if it's from anywhere else but I remember the first time I read that I was only 9 but I thought "Damn that makes a lot of sense!"

  • Now I remember, I was reading a lot of David Eddings when I was playing FF X so sometimes I get quotes confused.
