  • Do you consider Other M a blemish on what is otherwise one of the greatest series in gaming history, or do you see it as an action-packed adventure that does much to flesh out Samus as a character? Let the arguments commence!

  • I never even played the game, I just watched the playthrough on youtube. Other M is a disgrace to the Metroid name. Portraying Samus as a scared little girl unable to confront her fears ruins what we all came to love about her which was her steadfastness and strength.

  • I'll hold off on an official opinion since I've never played the game, but I don't think it will detract too much from Samus. Yeah, not using armor abilities when you clearly need them to survive is rather stupid, but that was the developer's fault rather than Samus herself.

I wouldn't mind Samus being protrayed as a little depressed or scared. Actually, being able to pull off all those sick attacks despite the fact you're scared shows more for her character than just being an emotionless bamf bounty hunter.

But that's the thing, the sense of solitude and fear in Metroid came from the player. The first time I had to fight the Chozo Ghosts, I didn't play the game again for weeks. The same thing happened when I came across the Space pirates. The sense of fear the game instilled in me, allowed me to relate to Samus and her feelings much more than her crying the entire game about not being accepted and the death of a metroid she simply calls, "The Baby".

i definitely agree with you about the games creepy factor coming from the player, not from the character themselves. and besides the fact that it doesnt fit well with the character to continually cry about the baby, that kind of takes some of the power out of the unbelievably awesome ending of Super Metroid. i can understand a character like samus being pensive about it, possibly even sad, but not some sobbing brat when theres space pirates out there to kill.

  • Other M is a disgrace to the series and is barely even a passable game on it's own merits. I liked just about nothing about this game especially the portrayal of Samus, which was atrocious. I don't see how my friend can defend the crap, with his only comeback about the portrayal of Samus being "Well, it's before everything else so she's not *** yet." Yeah, I don't buy that or really care at the same time because the overall gameplay and mechanics are either stupid design decisions or just plain not fun. The weird 2.5D wasn't working at all for me, I've play similar games that controlled a lot better and don't even get me started on the stupid first person nonsense they attempted and failed to throw in. It's so clumsy and awkward I don't know how they even thought it was a good idea.

Before everything else? so, all the metroids besides fusion didnt happen then? because chronoligically the sobby mopy dumb samus we see in other M is set between SM and MF

  • HAAAAA! That's hilarious! My friend's argument is invalid. I didn't even know that, thanks for this ammunition.

  • The gameplay was alright, the story and atmosphere were ***

One died in India. Three was tracked down in Brazil. I am the only one left. I am The Second Musketeer

  • I liked the gameplay and the atmosphere but i the story in my opinion fell falt

  • I don't remember playing through it all. I was didn't like it because I just finished playing the Prime series and this felt not so great compared to them. I also really didn't like the controls or story.

  • I liked the gameplay, but the fact that samus had lines, and portrayed her as scared when she fought ridley was annoying.

  • ^Yeah if she's gonna talk make sure she sounds hardcore like we've made her out to be before.

  • I didn't like it. In fact, I abhor its very existence.

The gameplay was all right. What really annoyed me was the awkward first person moments and the 2D moments were too easy to play.

As for the story... f*ck it. It was bad. Too predictable, a majority of the characters were boring, and the game completely ignored all of the games that came out before it (every single Metroid game besides Fusion).

And then we come to Samus. They completely ruined her character. They somehow made one of the most bad*ss female protagonists into a boring, fragile, and weak character. Why she chose to listen to Adam and not use her equipment (when the game would have many doors she could open them with) is just dumb. And that panic attack she had when Ridley showed up... WHY WOULD SHE HAVE A PANIC ATTACK IF SHE FOUGHT HIM SEVEN TIMES IN THE PAST GAMES? Wouldn't she have a panic attack in the first game?

I know that the game is important to explain the story of Fusion, but seriously, Nintendo really could had done better.

I AM THE SPY-MONKEY. BOW BEFORE MY MONKEY-NESS!

  • I agree with everything you said, except for that it was necessary to explain Fusion. I think Super Metroid flowed terrifically into Fusion, and that the very existence of a game in between the 2 just served to needlessly muddle the storyline. So to me, Other M is a game that should not have been made, period.
