The lights are on
Want to discuss women in games besides how "hot" they are? Instead of focusing on female assets, we'll be discussing how much females can kick ass and save the day! Whoever you like, let's talk about the positive female heroines in games!
So this article popped up on GI a few minutes ago: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/04/09/naughty-dog-demands-female-focus-group-members-for-the-last-of-us.aspx
Apparently a research firm hired to focus-test The Last Of Us did not plan on asking any female gamers their opinion on a game featuring a female as a prominent protagonist. *headdesk*
I really want to be surprised by this, but I'm not. My respect for Naughty Dog just went through the roof. In the Escapist artice linked to in the GI story, they also say naughty Dog was advised not to have Ellie on the cover, but to put her on the back. They refused. I was not interested in the Last of Us, but I might check it out just because of this.
I'm pre-ordering it now, just because of this.
I've had mine pre-ordered for a while, and Naughty Dog's handling of these issues is a big reason why. Although it helps that the game looks fantastic :)
Have I mentioned that I am a big fan of Naughty Dog? Because I am!
I'm always thrilled to see people like Meagan Marie and Naughty Dog within the industry making an effort to change things. Even if Ellie wasn't a lead, I would still think having a diverse focus group would enhance the quality of the game because of the feedback received.
Now I just need to stop forgetting to pre-order it...
The game does look good.
I thought it looked good the first time I read about it in GI, but I still wasn't sure about that pre-order. :) Naughty Dog has always been great but they can count me as a big fan now going forward.
