The lights are on
Want to discuss women in games besides how "hot" they are? Instead of focusing on female assets, we'll be discussing how much females can kick ass and save the day! Whoever you like, let's talk about the positive female heroines in games!
It's been a long time since I've been really excited about a game. I mean really excited. Yes, being an RE fan I was stoked that 6 was on it's way. But Tomb Raider is a brand name, for lack of a better term, that was taking a very bold chance and conversely seemed to be getting a bit of a drubbing for it by pundits months before the game was even released. Well, the GIO review is up. And I'm here to bring it to you:
Even Gamespot who hates everything lately agrees with GIO
Lol, I just put the review link in another thread, but this is definitely better. Lara deserves all the praise in her own shiny thread. :)
So far the general response has been very positive, although I've yet to read one that specifically praises the story, characters or writing in general. I've actually seen more that either knock the writing or ignore it altogether. So if you spot a reasonable sounding review that says the writing is good, please do link it.
My highlights are Rev3Games' video review, which was lukewarm, and CVG, which thought it was brilliant. Remember people, we have to be balanced about this! Just because we want this game to be flawless, it doesn't mean it will be. :) Aliens: Colonial Marines springs to mind... I'll link the two reviews, along with CVG's "review-roundup" where you can have an at-a-glance look at numerous publications' reviews and link you to them.
St Nik, don't rain on my Lara parade!
And for the record I really had no hopes for Aliens. That dog was never going to hunt.
So I guess I'll be the black sheep of this thread? :) And I had a bad feeling for Aliens too. Some franchises should just learn to stop with dignity. Ooops, this brings to mind another sci-fi series... I gonna be so unpopular by the end of the day!
You better not be directing that at Mass Effect *shakes fist* I'll fight you in the street!
But Nikolas loves Mass Effect, right?
Yes he does...but I'm not sure which Sci-Fi series....oh wait! Star Wars perhaps? That series should have ended with Return of the Jedi.
J is right! I'm one of those seemingly rare people that cringe whenever I read yet another anti-BioWare or anti-Mass Effect comment! I'm unreasonably excited to see the new one, which will presumably be on next-gen, and BioWare says that they're prepared to make radical changes, all the stuff that gets me excited. Mass Effect is one of my most favourite game series, I loved the ending, and I would never think that way towards it.
I was meaning Star Wars. The story has gotten a little convoluted with the prequels and sort-spinoffs in other media, and now they're bringing back Harrison Ford as Han Solo? Surely he's not going to be a grandpa character reminiscing about the 'good ol' days?' But at his age he can't even shoot straight! Oh well, at least his stunt double will be well paid.
Agree 100%. The prequel trilogy killed it, in fact I usually don't acknowledge their existence...Disney? HA!
Agreed. Star Wars was the first film I ever saw on the big screen. It was the reason I went to film school. At this point it's part of my DNA. But there was and is no reason to go beyond what the original three gave us. Some things are brilliantly self contained.
This is getting so off-topic, and ace will probably come in as the content police soon, but what do either of you think of the 1313 bounty hunter game? I personally think the idea has promise, but the E3 showing only got hype because of the visuals. I heard someone trash its 'originality' as being just 'Uncharted in space.'
*looks at watch* we're on borrowed time here but yeah, it has promise but I think you're right. The visuals are what sent everyone over the moon for it. Star Wars games are sadly as well very VERY miss more then hit.
I'm the opposite. I absolutely LOVE Star Wars and I hope it keeps going for a very long time. In fact one of those "sort-spinoffs in other media" (The Clone Wars Series) was what really got me to loving the series so much. I don't expect any of you to understand and if you want to just want to like the Original Trilogy, then that's fine, no one's forcing you to watch, read, or play anything else in the Star Wars Universe.
Mass Effect? Oh......that was an amazing series, one of the best I've ever played, until Bioware BUTCHERED it. Now, because of that horrible excuse of an ending, I have decided that I will research and research and research before giving Bioware any more of my money. I will likely NEVER give them any more of my money. That's how strongly I feel about it. As far as I am concerned, Mass Effect died with ME3. It's as I said with Star Wars, no one is forcing me to watch, read, or play anything in the Mass Effect Universe, and I'm not going to.
