Heroines of Video Games Group

Want to discuss women in games besides how "hot" they are? Instead of focusing on female assets, we'll be discussing how much females can kick ass and save the day! Whoever you like, let's talk about the positive female heroines in games!

  • So, I'm not sure if you all have heard, but the Steam digital distribution platform for PC and Mac has opened up its approval process to the community. Instead of guessing what the community would or wouldn't like to spend their money on, the people can now speak for themselves.

As I was musing about keeping a running blog of the games I've voted up to help people find them amidst the mass of titles waiting to be viewed, I noticed a lot of them had women as the protagonist or central character. I figured you all might be interested to see what some of these lesser known titles are all about and decide if they're worthy of your support too.

Click the titles for more info!

    Gray Matter

"Neurobiologist Dr. David Styles is one of the game`s central characters: since losing his wife in a horrible accident some several years ago, he has become a recluse, seldom leaving Dread Hill House, his English country estate.

When student and part-time street performer Samantha Everett shows up at his doorstep, she unexpectedly becomes his assistant. Hailing from America, she has been travelling through most of Europe the last couple years. Her first task: finding six test subjects at Oxford University for one of Styles` experiments. The experiment starts off innocently enough, but then inexplicable incidents start mounting.

Players control both Dr. David Styles and Samantha Everett in their bid to uncover the secrets and find out the truth. Gray Matter tackles questions concerning the nature of reality and the power of the human mind in constructing the world we take for granted."

    Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller

"This chilling point-and-click adventure is a thought-provoking mystery following Erica Reed, a Boston-based FBI agent, haunted by the unsolved case of a serial killer who took her brother’s life. Taking a turn for the strange, Erica unravels her mystery with the help of her post-cognition abilities – seeing an object’s past with a touch. What unravels is a much greater, much more complex and enigmatic thriller, as it becomes clear that someone knows Erica’s secrets."

    Memory of Soul

"The main heroine is Meira – a talented Seer – one of those able to look into one’s soul. With the help of her unusual skills she makes a living as a detective or, sometimes, as a mercenary. One day, she receives an unexpected letter from her old mentor – he cannot stop thinking about the mysterious death of his friend. The old man has a feeling it was not an accident. At his request, Meira comes back to the village she grew up in to uncover the mystery of the seemingly natural death. Perhaps that event was just a cover-up for a deeper intrigue?

It is you who, with the help of your sword, magic, and a pinch of detective zest, will have to find the answer. During your adventures you will not only explore the frozen world of the game, but also look for clues and talk with witnesses. Who knows, maybe you will find that the village [holds many] more mysteries than you thought…"

    Ether One

"Ether One is the first entry in a two part first person Adventure Game that flows on science fiction undertones in order to explore the importance and fragility of human memories. Set in the mind of a mysterious woman named Jean you will take on the role of a Restorer, an individual who can enter a persons memories in order to fix and mend them.

Unsure of your own identity or why you have been sent to restore this particular person your goal is to explore a physical representation of her memories and find the broken sources of each one. Through this you will build up an understanding of who you are, why you are here and most importantly what your relationship is with Jean."

  • Great idea Theora! I have a Mac, but I don't have a Steam account (yet). These all sound wonderful so I'll have to change that! Gray Matter and Cognition have me especially interested.

I'm excited to do some digging around on the site. I'll keep an eye out to add any others I find.  :)

  • Although it's lacking gameplay/decent trailer, I still think this one sounded pretty cool. I like family mysteries!

Incredipede is a puzzle game that celebrates the vast diversity of life in the world. The game follows Quozzle, a lone Incredipede on a quest to rescue her sisters. She has a unique ability to grow new arms and legs wherever she needs them, transforming into a snake, a spider, a horse, a monkey - anything you can imagine. You can give her antlers or a tail, use nature as a blueprint or strike out in weird new directions.
