The lights are on
Here to help new members of the GameInformer Online Community fit in and become active.
Ever since the rejuvination of the group, I have received a few messages and comments with things that the members think would improve the group as a whole. It would probably be best if they were in a place where the suits could see them/discuss them/modify them/whatever else, all together. So, put them here, in the suggestion box. Every suggestion has merit, so don't be shy about posting here.

So... Definitely, we need to figure out how to maintain the website awareness of the Welcome Group. It becomes a problem after about two weeks or so, when people forget that this place exists.
The occasional checking of the Groups page allows for users to see the latest activity, so encouragement of occasional checking would be effective.
Umm, I keep thinking that Spotlighting is an effective form for word of mouth, but it can be a little challenging to find new users on a weekly or occasional basis.
Perhaps we could still post the latest news of the Gameinformer Welcome Group in a culminated blog section. Outstanding members, latest posts, good replies, nice people, newest threads, weekly question, and have people visit the group to answer.
Fan-art is a great thing! This was the last I worked on.

Um, one idea that we could do is have Saint mention the group in the blog herding. Another is just have a link in our bio to the page, but our own personal pages don't really receive a whole lot of traffic. Another idea is for new members who our reading our blogs, we could have a link, but then it sounds like advertising. I really have no idea how to implement this without some kind of con, but I hope this helped.
I agree with Saint mentioning us in his herding, along with the events and podcasts and such that he does.
I have been leaving comments on blogs from people that I don't recognize and mention the group. I feel bad doing that, as it seems like advertising that Ben mentioned.
The occasional Spotlight is nice, but a monthly "Best of GI" blog would be pretty cool. It would include the things that Alex mentioned; standout blogs, people, replies, comments, and all that jazz. It would take a bit of work to gather everything, but it would keep us active... maybe find a way to get it put on the main page with the Blog Herding.
That may be good, but I feel the monthly "best of" feels a little to much like blog herding to me. We could probably try it though.
I"m dead serious with this idea... head bands. I've pushed the envelope with getting the gear but we should definitely get headbands.
We need GIO WG shoelaces. Represent.
It wouldn't be like Blog Herding. It would be monthly like the herding, but would feature more than blogs. It would have the things GvS mentioned in his post up there.
Maybe have a banner for a hero pic? Like I have with Team GIO?
Hey Jolt, maybe a good idea for a weekly question would be if you could change one thing about a game (be it a mechanic, story point, etc) what would it be and why. Details are obviously welcome.
Just a thought. I wouldn't be offended if it's a poor one.
No suggestion is a poor suggestion. That's a good question. It seems like the group is more receptive to non-gaming related questions. That, or losing the spark for this thing already. We shall see.
Alright, here's the new thing The Weekly Question seems to have fizzled out a bit, which, to be honest, was a little expected.
Applesteak, in a stroke of genius, blogged the GI Show's 10 Questions. I am sure you all know that its been a huge hit. So... why not have the GIO WG provide a weekly service? I'll post 10 Questions here every Monday for people to blog about. It will keep people coming back t the group, and maybe get involved a bit.
For this to work in the long run, I'm going to need some suggestions for questions. My brain is only so big, you know?
So, suggest away!
I had a list of suggestions and my computer crapped. So here's some again:
Favorite weapon in a game, most overrated character, least favorite food, worst song ever written, would you rather play with an original Xbox or Dreamcast controller forever, favorite book and why, and those are the only ones I can think of for the moment.
Most of the questions I can come up with are just random preference questions; not sure whether the goal of this group is something different or not.
So for the next set of questions (I only have one. I've never been someone to quickly think up questions). It is inspired by Saint's latest blog. So the question is, "You are one of the 10 people sent on a one way trip to Mars. You can only take 5 games with you, what are they?"
Alright, I got another question. "How did you come up with your gamertag and/or your GIO user name?"
Alright I have a suggestion. The GI staff does a Like/Dislike blog post each month, and I was thinking that we could do something of that nature with the GI welcome group. We would spotlight 5 members a week, preferably new members so they can get to know the community better, and they would give a brief description of themselves and state their likes and dislikes. Not sure if this is a good idea or not, hopefully it was a good one.
I like that idea actually.
