  • I wrote this back in june, and it is part of my Deadliest Warrior series. But it has Twilight Sparkle. mojaramask.deviantart.com/gallery

I like turtles. And monkeys. And cats.

  • Ack!  It's that time of the semester.  All those final papers and presentations are keeping me from doing what I really want to be doing, which is writing about cartoon ponies!  :D

Anyway, as soon as this semester is over I was figuring I'd try to take on another one of the longer fanfics out there.  The only novel-length one I've read so far is Eternal.  Right now I'm looking at Background Pony, Past Sins, or It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door.  All of them get good reviews.  If anyone has read those, which would you suggest?

BP is an Epic of Epic proportions....that's right its doubly epic.  That being said unless you feel like being horribly depressed of the clinical nature go with Past SIns.  Both are simply amazing and cannot be ranked higher than the other.  Read both but start with Past Sins.  Hope that helps!

Alright, don't know why my previous post didn't show up...

I would also recommend Past Sins on the same account as Avo's. Background Pony destroyed me emotionally. Unless you want the same, it might be best to turn away (Considering your fiction on Lyra, it might hit you harder than most.).

I could also add another to the list. Treasure in the West is a short but sweet adventure fiction regarding an adventure following Braeburn and Daring Do. I'm actually recording chapters of it for the author right now.

Background pony will murder your heart. It is insanely sad. Past Sins is overrated in my opinion. I know I will get torn to pieces for that, but I just can't stand it. I haven't read the other two, so I can't really talk about those.

I like turtles. And monkeys. And cats.

  • Thanks guys!  It looks like what you're saying is that I should read both of them, but be emotionally prepared for Background Pony.  (Usually I'm pretty hard to hit emotionally.)  I might start with Past Sins then, even if it is overrated.  No one's read Dangerous Business, eh?  It's supposed to be for people who like The Lord of the Rings.  (Which I do...)  Well, thanks again, everyone.

  • I know I'm late to the party, but while we're talking about Background Pony:

GRR.  I've never been so torn 150K+ words into a story...  On the one hand, it tries to tackle high-level themes artistically, with at least one well-developed, basically "original" character, and a wide cast of supporting characters, and it's got an incredibly interesting, depressing (yay!) concept, and the author--for the most part--has a strong command of the English language.  There are moments that are truly beautiful, something I can only say about one or two other fanfictions out there.

...On the other hand, each chapter seems to drag on for way longer than necessary, the poetic imagery is so thick and heavy-handed that you'd need a diamond to cut through it, and the pace meanders across different themes with something approaching detest for the overarching plot.  If you want to read a story where, several hours in, it feels like SOMETHING as been accomplished, you might want to look elsewhere.  Also, if you don't like having /multiple 'poetic' metaphors or similes in a single sentence/, and several pretty much every paragraph, then this might not be for you...

I might still finish it, now that I know it actually ends.  I liked the character, I liked the life it breathed into ponyville, and I liked the power of a few of the moments (being a person who wants to be a professional artist AND tends to fade into the background, it really strikes home hard sometimes).  I just feel like I have some sort of bipolar disorder while reading it, ricocheting  between loving it and hating it.

...That probably wasn't very helpful... <_<'  But that's my two cents.

  • So you're saying...start with Past Sins.  :D  But no, thanks for the heads up.  I'm actually okay with a story meandering a little, or even a lot, so long as it's worth it in the end.  What I want most is to come away affected.  And if, when it's all done, I can look back on it and find it actually meaningful, that would be worth exchanging hours of my life for.

  • So as you may or may not know, I've recently become interested in reading fanfiction.  So I read through these pages, looked up, and saved the stories that I thought I might be interested in.

Well I just finished the first one, which is A Rose Reverie.  Wow, that was a great story.  I found the entire thing to be very interesting (I enjoy reading from the point of view of people who are mentally unstable), especially the farther the story went along. When I got to the ending, it was just beautiful, and hit me right in the feels.  When Pinkie said "Okie Dokie Loki", I just lost it and broke down. T-T

Now on to the next one, Anthropology. (I'm going in alphabetical order)

  • Cool!  I really liked A Rose Reverie too.  (Though I'm not sure why.  I usually can't stand storylines with characters in mental facilities.)  Agh...but that ending...

Hmm...alphabetical order eh?  Looking forward to when you get to "E."

And let me know which ones you think are the most awesome.  There's a ton I haven't gotten to yet, and I don't want to miss the most special ones.  :)

  • I'm assuming you're talking about End of Ponies?  I can't think of any other 'E' ones off the top of my head. Lol.

I just finished reading Anthropology yesterday, and absolutely loved it!  It's definitely me\y favorite story so far, even though I've only read four.  Lyra is now right up there with Derpy in terms up best background pony. ^-^

It's weird how I can usually read all of the lines with the correct pony voice playing in my mind, lol.  Some voices are impossible to read any other way. Lol.

  • End of Ponies is amazing. It's a long read, but slogging through it is worthwhile.

Actually, I was talking about device heretic's Eternal, my favorite fanfic to date.  =P

  • Oh, well I have that one too. Lol.

I just realized that my next story on the list is Background Ponies, and it's almost 900 pages long!!!  That's like a large novel!  Dang, I better get on that then...

Just... don't take any anti-depressants while reading it.
