  • Hello loyal subjects,

This Forum from this day forward is decreed to be dedicated to the George R.R. Martin fantasy novel A Game of Thrones.

The following is ripped off from Wikipedia

A Game of Thrones is the first book in A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of high fantasy novels by American author George R. R. Martin. It was first published on 6 August 1996. The novel won the 1997 Locus Award,[1] and was nominated for both the 1998 Nebula Award[2] and the 1997[1] World Fantasy Award. The novella Blood of the Dragon, comprising the Daenerys Targaryen chapters from the novel, won the 1997 Hugo Award for Best Novella. In January 2011 the novel became a New York Times bestseller[3] and reached #1 on the list in July 2011.[4]

Alright people, let's get this discussion started on A Game of Thrones: Book 1 of the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

    "You know nothing Jon Snow"

  • Just wanted to say that this the only book I've actually read so far. After getting in to the show and watching both seasons, I gave the books a try and loved the first one. I'm currently about 1/2 way done with A Clash of Kings.

  • The first one is amazing. They're dense reads, so they're not for a bit of "fun" reading, but when you get into them they're fantastic. I've read the first 3.

  • To be honest, the first book didn't appeal to me for quite some time.  I liked parts of it, but really wasn't hooked until the end, and even then it took a bit to grow on me.  I think I was turned away by some of the explicit sexual content, especially with Dany and Drogo(remember, she is like 13 in the book).

After reading the next book though, I really became interested in the entire story.  I guess over the past year or so, I have become pretty passionate about A Song of Ice and Fire.

    "You know nothing Jon Snow"

  • Considering I had already watched the show, the sexual content didn't shock me that much (I just pictured Dany as Emila Clarke).  I finished the first book in like 2 and a half weeks, I couldn't put it down.

  • I was reading the first book during a really painful time of my life, and it helped a lot to be absorbed in a great book then. I had already gotten the "shocking death of Ned Stark" spoiled for me but the book was amazing nonetheless. I spent like 3 hours a day reading and finished it in about a week. That was a fun week.

  • Yeah, I said the first book took some time for me to come to appreciate, and that is true, but I did read it very quickly, so I must have been entertained.  I was a bit put off by the POV writing style at first, but I kind of like it now.  There are times though, where a chapter on Tyrion or Arya ends and I want to skip ahead to their next chapters.

    "You know nothing Jon Snow"

  • That was the most frustrating for me. In the first book it wasn't as big of a problem, but in book two and three the jumping away from important places got ridiculous. To have something book altering happen and the before you can understand it you have a 100 page break of some character wandering around doing nothing is infuriating sometimes.

  • Reflecting back on the first book, what really is interesting is how my "allegiances" have changed with the characters. In GoT I was all for the Starks... but now it's different. That's the magic of GoT... we don't have a clear "good guy". I'm a Jon Snow and Theon fanboy but I clearly understand why they are not fit to possibly "win". Just some thoughts

  • And I'm still a Stark fan, though I include Jon in the umbrella as he takes most after his father. I've always thought Theon was a jerk.

  • I completely agree with you about Theon being a total jerk, but I still think he is one of the most morally ambiguous characters who struggles with his possible "Stockholm Syndrome" and devotion to his biological family. I just think Theon is interesting, but since this is a GoT thread... I won't go further into explaining (due to later spoilers)

  • Oh guys kinda off topic but when does Theon appear again after ACOK?

  • I don't think we want spoilers on this GoT thread... if you want I'll message you what happens or you can post on a different thread

  • LostNIK:

Oh guys kinda off topic but when does Theon appear again after ACOK?

I agree with Chris, this would best be discussed in the "everything goes"  A Song of Ice and Fire thread, or you could make one for just Theon if you wanted.

As a reminder, this thread is for the first book, so anything from after A Game of Thrones should be posted in the book that the events happened, so if you want to discuss Theon's story as it pertains to A Clash of Kings, go ahead and post it here

I know that right now it may seem like it isn't a big deal to not stay on topic, but as the group grows and we have more members, it will become important that we do our best to stay organized.

    "You know nothing Jon Snow"

  • I am also still very much a Stark fan, regarding Theon and his story of AGoT, he has been a great friend to Robb, and a valuable asset in battle.  Still, I don't like the guy, there is just something about him that makes my skin crawl right from my flesh!

My favorite characters from AGoT are Jon Snow, Arya, Yoren, Tyrion, Bronn, and Varys.
