A Group of Ice and Fire

From North beyond the Wall to the deepest depths of the Red Waste, all people of Westeros and the Free Cities are welcome here in our little group. We discuss any and all things related to A Song of Ice and Fire, along with the HBO series Game of Thrones.

An introductory Blog of Ice and Fire

BE ADVISED--THIS GROUP, AND THIS BLOG ARE IN THE VERY BEGINNING STAGES, I HAVE MADE AN AMBITIOUS START AND IT WILL TAKE ME SOME TIME TO MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENT THREADS, ETC.  PLEASE BARE WITH ME FOR NOW. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BEING A GROUP CO-OWNER OR MODERATOR, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO ALL OF THE REQUIRED UPDATES AND UPKEEP ALL BY MYSELF.

Welcome to the Club.  First rule is that we TELL EVERYBODY about this group.  We want all fans of not only A Song of Ice and Fire, but also the HBO Show Game of Thrones to be part of this group.  We can spread the word to others too, many people write on their bio pages that they are fans of books like LoTR, or Fantasy in general.  They may love ASoIaF if they are nudged just a bit.  Your Khaleesi commands you to go forth and recruit people to our cause.  Should they not join us, they will die a thousand painful deaths as I ravage their cities, plunder their goods, and leave the ruins in ashes.  I am a dude, but I like Khaleesi better than Khal:)

Seriously though, I think this group could be a lot of fun, buy like anything else it will only be as good as we make it.  It could very well be that I will get all the forums built up, get the intro blog and some other specific topic blogs done, recruit and get a couple dozen members quickly, only to have the group basically dead in two weeks.  We need activity and discussion, and we need it from all of us.  I encourage you to favorite and to sign up for email alerts if you really want to get involved in the discussion.

Format--

Forums:

The way I set this up, for now, everything can change, is that I have made a separate forum thread for each book, each season of the TV show, and one for All books, one for all seasons of the show, and one for games and such related to ASoIaF.  These aren't necessarily all that there will be, but I wanted to start with a strong foundation.  The idea is pretty self explanatory, and designed to keep the focus on the book(or whatever) that specific forum is for.  What I am trying to avoid is having somebody post spoilers that happen in, for example, A Feast For Crows in the Clash of Kings thread.  Basically, it's like a tier, if you are posting in the book 4 forum, anything from the first 4 books is fair game for discussion.  If you haven't read book 4, don't expect to read that forum and not be spoiled, because it will happen.  One concern with having so many threads is keeping them all active.  They don't need to be all extremely active at any given time, and there is a general discussion form that can be used as well.  Additionally, this is an open group, you are all welcomed to start any threads you want.

Blogs:

Blogs area great way of making long statements and sharing opinions with others.  Sadly, for some reason in groups, comments are not able to be left on blogs.  So feel free to write a blog if you want, I will be writing them from time to time just to update the group announcements, but if you want to generate a blog that will create discussion, you may want to just do it as a forum thread...though if we get too many, we may have to put time limits on them, but I doubt that will happen.  I have heard that the site is getting an update to the comment system soon, so perhaps it will fix the group blogs too!  If you do post a blog, or a blog disguised as a forum thread, please be sure to put any appropriate spoiler warnings toward the beginning of the body of the writing.

Files and Wiki---

Well, these things exist...I have yet to find a real useful way to use them.  Thought the wiki could be a great place to post links to other sources that are relevant to the group.

Polls:

I think Polls can be really fun, and I look forward to answering some of the ones that you all can come up with!

Rules--

Our group will be expected to follow all site rules.  This means we treat each other with honor and respect as befits our birth, and for this sake we are all highborn Lords and Ladies and deserve to be treated with great respect, even in, especially in times of hostility.  We don't have to agree with or love each other all of the time, but we must regard each other with all the courtesies we would give our friends.  Please feel free to post images, videos and links to other media that you may feel other fans of ASoIaF or GoT would like.  Be aware that you are responsible for the media, including links that you post.  Please be sure they are not graphic, dangerous(virus, malware, spyware, etc), before posting.  Additionally I would ask that you always give credit to whoever created the media/art you are posting.  If you find an awesome Arya Stark drawing on DevainArt or somewhere else, be sure to post a comment to the creator that you are using it(give them a link) and also credit the artist when you post it here.  This will help us when it comes to the inevitable moment when somebody sees their work here in passing.  Also, material that is protected by law should not be posted.  Posting files that allow people to pirate the HBO show or the books will not be tolerated.   We all know that the internet is famous for leaking stuff before it's time, if you come across something that has been leaked, I would ask that you do not share the media here.  We can check it out somewhere else if we want, and then discuss it here.

This is our group, it isn't MY group.  I am posting these rules as general guidelines(though the site rules are always in effect).  I am not Rick Grimes, this is a democracy.  You all have a say in how the group progresses, so use your voice if you want to see something changed.  I am always open and willing to make changes and have new ideas implemented.

Regarding SPOILERS--

As mentioned, the reason each separate piece of media(book/show/games) has their own forum is so that we can keep discussions relegated to the books or season in which they took place.  The hope is that this will help minimize the amount of spoilers that are posted.  The threads are "backwards compatible"(ha, take that Sony!!!).  This means that anything that happened ahead of the book or season that you are posting in, is fair game and no spoiler warnings will be necessary as it is implied.  We can openly discuss events of book 3 in the Forum thread of book 5, but we should not openly discuss events of book 5 in the forum thread of book 3.  Make sense?  Good.  In the A Song of Ice and Fire forum, anything can be discussed.  Same as the one for HBO Series Game of Thrones Overall.  In the beginner forum, people that haven't read or watched the shows can post and ask for information.  When people post in that forum, we should really try and help them out, as they may be future fans like the rest of us are now!

I think this is a good start.  For now I am going to call it an evening.  This weekend I will finish making the forum threads for the pre determined topics, and then I will link all of them in the appropriate forums as well as right here:

I am a beginner, I know nothing Jon Snow
