I'm sure most stuff does get read, especially in bug feedback.  Also, I don't believe theres a ton of technical staff at GI.  So for the most part here is what it comes down to, making a site and smoothing out the bugs.  TAKES A WHILE.  Stuff comes up randomly and that needs to be taken care of on the spot.

So what the forums aren't great?  Oh well, I'm sure they're working on it.  But y'know, it takes time.  Also, when there's a freaking error, have fun looking through code to find where that logic went wrong.  Or if it was a person's PC that was the issue.  Here's the idea, stop whining about it, something will be done about it.  For the meantime, try to contribute.

What's upsetting people about the forums not being very good, is before they changed them it was perfect. And before the change we had this huge thread about all this new stuff, and most of that stuff hasn't come to fruition. Also the forums have been downgraded big time and it's annoying to go from what we had to this. I know something will happen eventually but the amount of time it's taking and lack of updates on progress is a little frustrating.

If you look back at my Site Feedback stuff since day one, we've wanted a forum overhaul, too.  But we are owned by a publicly traded Fortune 500 corporation, so making changes takes time to go through the proper channels, not to mention that Anthony is right - we're a small team and many other things have come up instead.  A lot of things that have taken a lot of time and hours, that you may not necessarily see - like how our ad code has changed to improve site performance, or how we created a newsletter creation program to send out better newsletters every week.  I've worked many late hours and even weekends to make sure that this site is running as good as it can, and every editor here, even Andy and Reiner, are constantly talking to me about ways to improve the site.

Trust me, we care.  And we know this site wouldn't be worth having if we didn't have the community we do, in fact, that's the whole focus of our new site.  So, thank you for being here, and thank you for speaking up.

I was pretty transparent about the release of 2.1, letting you guys know what was coming, and in some of our recent releases, I haven't been able to reach out and let you know what are plans are, and I'll work on that. Just know, we're working harder than ever before on improving this site.

Another thing you should be aware of, is the fact sometimes we don't have a say in what it is we are working on.  GameStop (that aforementioned corporation) has some things rolling out soon that we need to be a part of, so some of our development time has to be devoted to that.

I'll start a new thread about site updates here in a few moments, you guys can sound off on what we have done, will be doing, and are working on now (in the case of the Laboratory).

  • Thanks, all I wanted to know is that you guys are listening. I'm looking forward to the updates.

    We definitely are.

Now please, put some pants on.

  • But I don't wanna disappoint the ladies.

  • For the sake of getting better, it would be helpful to have specific changes/requests for the forums.  Out of three pages, the only one I've heard was "make avatars bigger."  Which I can definitely understand.  I've also heard easier to navigate... but what, specifically, would facilitate that?  I'd also suggest some kind of separation between the post and the signature, and that the "Latest Post" link should actually be a link like it's supposed to be.

Having never used the lithium forums, what UI changes would make these forums more usable?

  • I really appreciate that, Mastersnake.  Just so everyone is aware, navigation is a major priority to us for upgrading the forums.  We'll get started on doing so after E3 (since we want the site as stable as possible for the Expo's events).
